3 valves for the 5.4....
A buddy of mine who is in the KC plant said that they will produce 5.4 engines with 3 valves THIS summer!! PLEASE 3 VALVES AND MANLEY RODS FOR 03!! Especially the Lightning!
So why dont they just use the 4 vavle heads they already have. Also are they going to increase the HP on the 4 valves? With these rumored ratings the 3 valve will produce more then the 4 valves.
I would hope this is to increase power as we already have less HP then chevy and soon to be behind Dodge with their "hemi".

3 valves
the way i hear it , they,re supposed to put in 2 intake valves and 1 oversized exhaust, something to overcome the aniemic nature of the beast. and this is to go into the tottally revamped f150. the throttle body is supposed to go to 80 mm or something like that. if i,m wrong, any input would be appreciated
Originally Ford said the 3 valvers would ship in this season as '03 models. I haven't seen anything official from Ford but with some of the recent troubles it is always possible this gets knocked back.
The three valve will obviusly increase HP. Better breathing will move the torque curve up in the rpm range, which means better HP numbers.
My educated guess is that the three valvers are designed to keep torque levels up yet allow better top end breathing. The four valvers could do this to some extent but at a greater cost to produce.

Another thought, the 4 valve engines run such a high compression ratio, they require 91 octane. I am hopeing the 3 valve's can run on 87. I think the three valve will not be available until the 04's. I hope they are available for the beginning of the production run.

A manager at a Ford dealer in Mesa AZ told me that the new redisigned F150's would come out on mid 2003 as a 2004 models. Could not tell me much about what differences there are going to be compared to the current models, but he mentioned 3 valve heads more HP 5.4's, different suspension and steering and different body. I'm just thinking if ford puts bigger throttle and more valves to produce more HP, what's going to happen to MPG?
This link is to a Blue Oval News tech doc that gives some details. The 5.4 is getting a power increse with a 3V 5.4 and there is also going to be a deisel engine available (4.5L) There's a new tranny and stuff too, check it out.

Well, it looks like the 3v might have slightly less HP but more torque. The article is a little iffy on that. Maybe the reason for the fluctuation in HP depends on the type of transmision it has. I was reading something on the 7.3L powerstroke Deisel that it generates 250HP with the automatic transmission and 275hp with the manual. I'm sure the Navigator will use only the auto tansmission. I don't really understand the way transmisions work in detail. Maybe someone else has some input on this?
Wasn't that article from 2000? I read initally that the 2003 Expedition would have those engine choices, including the V-6 Diesel, but the 2003 is already released and the only difference is an all aluminum 4.6 V-8. It makes sense to carry over the 5.4 though, if they have the 3V near completion. I would rather them do it right the first time, so if it means a slight delay, so be it. Dodge introduced thier new Ram with some carry over engines. Before the new Hemi.

And i really don't want to wait another year
