The 97-98 5 speeds were junk, they grind between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd. There is no kit available to inprove the shift throw. The syncros can't take the fast shifts even if there was one. The 99+ 5 speeds are of an improved design and shift some what smoother. I have had both and they both can not be shifted fast. I am on the second tranny on my 2000. This weekend I switched to Synthetic ATF and it helped a little. All you can do is Mash the clutch and pull back as fast as you can and hope nothing falls off.
