Ram air set up

I've been putting together some ideas on a ram air for my Superduty.

First, install F150 TB elbow ported and polished to hook to a new 75mm TB as per Neal's clever input. My TB is at a 45 degree angle which is good for the present filter location, but not for what I want to do. And just for *****s and giggles, I'll add the Poweraid.

Rig an intake to hold bigger MAF (Granatelli? Pro-M?) and FIPK. I was thinking about using an intake for an LS1 vette. Its shape and size look similar to what I need, just turn it upside down to point towards the hood. Or use some PVC. Still a lot of thinking to do there. Either way, it has to run directly from a hood scoop to the throttle body, no bends.

I will do an electric fan, probably JDM, which will elliminate the fan shroud to make room.

The hood. 3 choices for the Superduty. None are exactly right so I'll have to add a scoop where I need it. The additional scoop or cowl will serve well to release heat from under the hood, anyway.
Reflexxion cowl hood -add scoop
Cerveni double scoop hood - add scoop in center
Good Hood from Keystone functional heat extractor - add scoop

It seems a bit much, but I really think the ordinary KIPK can be drastically improved upon. Just today, I cut a 3"x7" hole behind the grill through that plastic assembly the grill is mounted to. It actually made a difference when going 30mph and up. For now, I'm trying to find a way to direct the air directly to the filter from that hole. At first, I was going to plumb 2 neat 3" holes from the grill mount up to the filter. Then I saw there really wasn't the room I needed and some of my tools were at my buddy's house.
SOOOO, it's Sawzall city, baby!! I cut the hole and ripped the rubber flap thingy out. Simple. I'm thinking that if I can find the right floor vac head, I could attach that to the hole and direct the air. I just got to find the right size that can rotate.

Any ideas or suggestions is greatly appreciated. It will be a long time before I can put this all together. All the better to fine tune the plans.

thewhiteford,

I've been thinking about this too, but what I haven't figured out is what to do with the water that the hood scoop is going to pull into the air cleaner box....?? Banks makes a system for campers with Ford V10's, that picks up air from under the front bumper and runs it up through an monster aircleaner. It has a huge, flaired, intake scoop that looks like it would suck in small animals....

Good luck,

Dan

I'd avoid the Granatelli, and JDM's fan does come with a shroud..it's exactly like an OEM Ford installed fan.
My Cervinis ram air hood can have a ram air kit ordered for it...I've chosen not too because it requires a lightning box. The ram air ' nostrils' do serve to cool the top of my supercharger, though. If you want 5 free dynoed HP...make the diameter of your fenderwall air opening larger.

dtyo, I took a look at that motorhome Banks intake. You're right! Look out squirrels!LOL But I still want a straight shot to the throttle body. As for the water, I thought about making a chamber for the elements to "flow" into and dissipate right after entering the scoop. Plus the K&N is designed to take some heavy abuse, just needs more frequent recharging.

BTB, I'm really only half certain about the worth of an aftermarket MAF to begin with. So many mixed reviews, the only way to know is to just do it. But I'll take your advice and stay away from the Granatelli. Thanks

Is the fan shroud necessary with the JDM fan? Can I keep it off or does Flexalite's fan kit not require the shroud? Gotta make room ya know.

I wouldn't bother ordering the hood with functional ram air, either, but for another reason. That kit uses the "stock" filter location. It seems kind of redundant to have ram air go through all those bends. It would take a hurricane to push the air through hard enough to be effective (IMO).

After cutting the hole behind the grill, I did see a gain. I'll look into the fenderwell idea next. I noticed that the plate below the open K&N filter is pretty large. It would seem logical to cut that back too. Still have to focus the air on the filter, though. That would optimize all the cutting. Home Depot, here I come!

Cool

HI!... thewhiteford : YA, stay away from the GRANETELLI maf unit. Get yourself a 80mm PRO-M unit or get yourself a 90mm LIGHTNING MAF. That's what I just did. By the way I'm currently working on my "TRUE RAM AIR" set-up. I should have it done in a couple of weeks. I'll post pics then. Try to get yourself a S&B "RAM" filter also. Here's a pic of my 12 inch lone S&B "RAM" filter.
