Question HP & torque Question

The King Ranch with the 5.4L comes stock with around 260 HP & 350 torque. The Harley Davidson comes stock with around 380 HP & 450 torque. The difference (i think) is the Harley Davidson a turbocharger. Is their an after market bolt on, or could I order the turbocharger for the Harley and add to my King Ranch?

I use my truck to pull a 30ft 7800lb travel trailer camper. The extra HP & torque would be nice. About a month ago, I pulled up a 2.5 mile 7 degree grade, I had my foot on the floor for 2.5 mile and it would only run 48 mph. Under these conditions, would a turbocharger damage my motor?

Specs:

F150 King Ranch
5.4L engine
4x4 Off Road Package
Class III Towing pkg (with small radiator)
Color Matching ARE hard bed cover (nice)

Thanks,
Tony

the h/d is supercharged. check out the supercharger/ turbo forum. from the sound of what you are locking for i think the magnacharger is the one that suites your needs. adding the stock supercharger from the h/d would be alot of work and trouble. good luck.

Exclamation KingRanch-Tony:

What gears are you running to be able to pull a 7800 # trailer up a 7% grade @ 48 mph? What gear were you in and what rpm's were you at? What's your GCWR on that combo?

I'd say you are doing just fine with a 1/2 ton truck with a 5.4 in it to be able to do that.

HP & torque Question

Thanks BROTHERDAVE & MitchF150 for your replies and comments.

BROTHERDAVE, I will check out the magnacharger as you suggested. Would you know whether or not Ford would sale me the supercharger for a HD?

MitchF150, I was going up the Saluda Grade in North/South Carolina border on I26. I was in 2nd gear an I have the 3.55 Axle Ratio and RPM's at 4000 - 4500 (The truck was straining). The 7800 # is the GVWR weight of the camper, the dry weight of the camper is 6500 # and I easily had over 1000 # of fishing and camping gear.

But, you are correct, I think I was doing fine pulling this kind of weight, I was passing "some" cars. BUT, I would always like to do better. I go camping a lot, and the rest of my camping buddies have Chevy's, I would like to be able to pass them going up these types of hills.

Thanks again for your comments,
Tony

Cool

Well, I'm impressed at any rate. Just something else to consider if you go the blower route..... The compression ratio of these tritons are just a tad over 9:1. Add a blower to that, and I don't think they sell octane high enough at the local gas stations to keep you from pinging. I know these bolt on blowers are supposed to work with the stock compression, but I think they cut the boost way down......

Another thing you'll have to consider is upgrading the tranny. Pumping out x more HP and torque will create more heat and stress on the tranny. Especially towing that TT. It'll be slipping just that much more.

The other thing to consider is just getting some shorter gears. Get something like a 4.10 or 4.56. It'll probably let you stay in third going up that hill!

Good luck and happy camping.

I think you would be much better off with a properly tuned high-performance chip. You can get a two-way chip--one side for 'normal' driving and side two for 'towing'. If you do this, you will have to use 91-94 octane but that would be true with the Eaton s/c.

I would not try the s/c addition/modification because there are so many ancilliary pieces/issues involved. It's not just a 'bolt-on' situation.

i have a vortech ( havent installed yet) and vortech suggest a transgo transmission kit be installed. not sure but i think the magna kit comes with a chip to address the pinging and fuel delivery. most of the after market kits do keep the boost down and 91 octane is ususally manditory.
as for ford selling you the supercharger, i am sure they would for a small fortune just remember that there is a lot more to a supercharger set up besides the supercharger itself.
ask around in the supercharger forum and the computerchip forum for other peoples experience.
