Question Pulling a 2001 5.4l from F150

I am able to get a super deal on a 2001 5.4 motor. A friend had a 1K beam fall right through the cab of his 2001 F150 Super Cab. He got a good insurance settlement. He bought back the truck and hence I can get the motor & Transmission and ANY other motor related parts i.e. radiator, exhaust, computer etc) for $1000 + excuse a $500 debt he owes me. The motor ran great the day it was hit. I was with him! Dash forward not hit at all. 26K miles.

I have never extracted a motor. I will have to do this alone (he is heading for vacation. Will be doing the removal in a dirt drive.

HOW HARD IS A MOTOR & TRANSMISSION REMOVAL FOR THIS TRUCK? ANY TIP GREATLY WELCOMED. METRIC or SAE? SPECIAL TOOLS?

I don't know a thing about pulling a 5.4 but i just have to say that you are one lucky SOB! Your friend isn't but atleast something good will come of it. What will you do with it? I think it's time to find some aftermarket catologs and go nuts. What an ausumn opportunity to learn everything about the 5.4 hands on. Good luck!

Remember to drain all the fluids, and get all those pesky wire connectors and small bolts undone from the tranny and frame. I have pulled 3 engines and I always miss something. Damn I wish I had one to play with that is a great oppurtunity I would love stickin that engine in my 56 F350, oh baby that would be sweet. I might even go and buy a late 80's or early 90's mustang and wedge it in that bad boy, wow I am getting happy just thinking about it. Go nutz and show us pic's if you can I kinda want to see that wrecked F150--is it like the nomad on Home Improvement.

Yes, the truck is in bad shape but the front fenders and dash are is great shape...he will try to sell them too. Oh by the way it is a 4X4 and he says transfer and diffs go with the engine!!!!

Now I feel guilty...$1500...maybe I'll buy him a steak! Sounds like a deal to me. He really got a sweet settlement deal so he just wants it gone. Is the F150 2001s all metric?

It should be all matric but I garuntee there will be a bolt under somthing that you slip off of because it is standard. Every bolt I have removed from my '97 is metric.

I might even buy him dessert with that steak.

Hell-of-a-deal dude!

Did the box of the truck get wrecked too?

I keep hearing about Ford dealers who pull the cab off the frame to do engine work. It might be easiest for you to do that. That way you can take your time removing the engine/tranny.

The box has only a few small "bends where the cab bent down to the box front edge. I could remove it fairly easy I think.

Was the damage kinda like this?

LOL.... holy crap!....at least this ones a Cheby! Ha ha ha ha.

Good thing your box survived. I don't think much of anything survived in the Cheby.

What kind of a stupid a$$ parks right beside a tree they're going to topple... even if it's supposed to fall in the other direction??? Doh.

the whiteford asks what I will do with the 5.4 and tranny. I am kicking around the idea of grafting it into an early 1948 Ford P/U...a dream of mine.

Dang, engine, tranny, t-case, and diffs, I think you just got the deal of the century. I wouldn't minde having that to build a monster 5.4 engine and then drop it in my 97 or in our old 73 Bronco. I can picture my slogan on the windshield ( and this works on that 48 too) "Old and new, and Yes it's all blue"

Galaxie
Check out last months issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords. They are stuff the 5.4 lightning engine in a 86 notchback Mustang. It fits in there but it is well above even the cowl hood they had on it.

If I remember correctly from a previous thread, the best way to remove the engine is to pull the cab from the frame and you are good to go. Or no, that was for replacing the head gaskets. Good luck with the project.
