Question about replacing plugs in 5.4
In the Chilton's manual, the procedure for replacing spark plugs on a 2000 5.4 includes disconnecting the neg battery cable.
I think I understand that disconnecting the battery for a period of time will erase the stored ODBII codes.
I am trying to correct an intermittant misfire, so I thought that I would start by changing the plugs. My dilemma is this: I won't have access to a scan tool for several more days, but I would like to go ahead and change the plugs. Following Chilton's procedure would wipe out the stored codes, so I'm wondering...is it absolutely required to disconnect the battery cable??? Is this one of those steps thrown in just in case my four year old climbs in the car and tries to crank it?
Thanks in advance for your help.
