Thumbs down Engine stalling, need help

The problem I am having is when I come to a stop. The engine will do a stall kinda thing where, when I first stop, my rpm is around 750. The rpms will suddenly drop down to 200~300, then rev back up to 1000 or so. Then it drops back down to 750. On two occasions, the engine has died. I have about 23,000 on the engine now. What do ya'll think?

Runnert,
Try taking the air tube off the injection unit and clean the butterfly valve with injection cleaner spray and wipe it with a lint free rag. Then purchase Techron fuel injection cleaner and add it to your tank. The 20 oz. container treats up to 20 gallons of gasoline. Try it. It worked for me. Bugman.

Hard to say for sure, but my guess is a clogged fuel filter. If you routinely run your tank very low before filling up, that increases the chances of clogging the filter.

Question

You haven't diconnected your battery for anything lately have you? Mine does the same thing for up to a month or so after I've disconnected the battery, which after several minutes will reset the computer. Then it learns everything and it's back to normal.

Ok, I cleaned out the intake and that seemed to do the job. I tried to get the fuel filter off, but for the life of me I could not. There seems to be a clamp on either side of the filter, and each clamp has this metal clip the hangs there. If anyone can tell me real quick how to get the fuel filter off, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I will do a search for removing the filter. Also, when I went to the auto store to get the intake cleaner, one of the guys in there told me that I could not clean the intake because it is teflon coated and there should be a warning sticker on the engine stating not the clean due to the coating. I looked for the note, but there was nothing. When I opened up the intake, there was no teflon coating of any sort. So I really do not know what that was all about. He must be thinking of that other truck...

My truck did something similar for a while. The engine RPM fell temporarily and then rose after I came to a stop. I had a K&N air filter at the time. I changed the filter to the original and the irregular idles reduced in number and severity. I never stalled.

I decided to reset the computer, by disconnecting the battery, and reinstall the clean K&N air filter. My truck ran fine with very infrequent irregular idles.

I'm still wondering what causes this.

Runnert - I understand there is a special tool needed to remove the filter. Can't remember the details but if you search all topics way back you should be able to find more information.

If I recall the tool is not very expensive but is necessary. Apparently with the right tool and technique it is easy, but many have cursed Ford for making it the way they did.

Rcl,

I put on a K&N filter back around 4,000 miles, so that is interesting that I am going through something similar as did you. I will probably reset the computer as well.

Dirt Bike Dave,

Yeah I saw that as soon as a did a search. I never would have thought you needed a tool, but it figures. I like the old style better...hose and clamp.

Still, does anyone know anything about the teflon? Just curious.
