Hows a 3:31 ratio for towing with a 4.6 Triton
Don't do it!!!!! Why do you want to go to a higher gear ratio (lower number) for towing? You are going the wrong way. You will be in second gear pulling up an incline at 45 mph.
My 1997 4x4 with 4.6L, 3.55 and tow package sucked big time. It shifted up and down w/o a trailer attached - and even worse with trailer.
My new 5.4 with 3.55 and tow package is a dream - plenty of power and torque without all of the shifts.

Unless you have 235 size tires, it will be a DOG! BIG DOG!
I have 3.55s and the 4.6 5sp and it tows our 2K pound boat great! No problems at all! I also have 285 BFGs on it.
3.73s would be better and 4.10s great! but I am not paying the money to do the front.

I have a 3:55 now with a 4.6 what will the difference be with a 3:31 ? How much can I tow with this combo,automatic 4x4 4.6 with tow pkg and 3:31
thanks

After I put 1" taller tires on my truck I have to keep the overdrive off when towing. My lease is up in May but if I were to keep this truck I would go to 3.73's. With 3.31's your truck would be hard pressed to out acelerate a Yugo, much less a Chebby. Don't go any taller especially if you're planning to put taller tire on your ride.

Ranger,
I hope this answers your question. These numbers are round abouts for those math majors out there. I have a 2001 Screw 4.6 4x4, tow pakage, chip, K&N and cat-back. My rig came w/ 16" stock rims & tires (29" tall) and a 6500 lb. tow rating. I put some 17" F150 stock rims & tires (30.5" tall) because it looks much better. I tow a 6300 lb. boat and trailer just fine. I figure that the mods off set the change in gear ratio ( about a 3.38 ).
Good luck
