Angry surging 302 engine warm or cold

I have an 89 f150 302, re-man engine in 98, displays no codes when read, the engine surges when the truck is idling warm or cold. Sometimes to the point of stalling. Also idles up when truck is put in gear (AOD). I have replaced plugs, wires. I also get a winey noise when stepping on the gas now and again. I'm stumped & tired of paying techs to find nothing. Please help me????

Did you put a new egr valve on? it sounds like that may be your problem, it can get carbon built up in it and cause sytpoms like you described. The older system can have a bad part but unless it breaks completely it can still be with in the spec built into the ecm.

Ive seen this alot on speed density ford cars and trucks, first being the voltage regulator, second being the TPS is outta range or bad. more than likely the idle screw is to high or to low causing the TPS voltage to be outta range throwing the puter into a frenzy. Check the voltage at the TPS with a digital volt meter with key on engine off, you want the voltage less than 1 volt, preferable around .998. also make sure the throttle body is not sludged around the blades. Good Luck

I had surging problems with both of my f-150's. The first time, I had no clue what was causing the problem, so I had a mechanic look/fix her. It turned out to be the TPS sensor, and the fuel injectors and throttle body needed cleaning as well as the butterfly valve. It made a BIG difference.

I decided to fix it myself when the 89 acted up. Solved the problem with 2 hipower fuel injector cleaners and using a scrub brush and throttle cleaner I cleaned the t body and butterfly on it. Solved its problem. Might check it out too.

Tell me if I am having the same problem and need the same fix: When I come to a stop, the engine goes to idle for a brief second, then the idle drops down to around 200~300, then races back up to 1000 or so, then goes back to normal at 750 and remains there. There has, however, been two times the truck has died. I have about 23,000 miles thus far.
