Synthetic ??'s
I have asked Ford via the Ford homepage about the use of synthetics and they have told me that Ford does not prohibit the use of synthetics in its engines as long as the oil meets Ford's specs.
However, a few of the shop managers at the larger dealerships said that Fords block are not cast to use snythetic oils and that the synthetic oils will "absorb" into the block and could "bleed" through it into the water jackets or to the outside of the block.
They also said some guys they know who build engines (paint) the inside of the engine block (not the cylinders)to prevent this so-called seepage.
Also a friend of mine who is a chevy mechanic and owns a new s-10 stopped using Mobil 1 because the engine had a lot of leaks.
Living in Pittsburgh the use of a synthetic would be good, but if I had engine problems, I could have a problem at the shop.
Any comments?

I have used Amsoil Series 2000 0W30 synthetic motor oil for 106,000 miles. There are no leaks and it doesn't burn a drop. I also use Amsopil SDF11 filter & change both every 10,000 miles...Nuff said...Mark.
oh my. Bad advice to say it bluntly.
Basically if your engine already has faulty seals or failing ones, synthetics will make the leaks worst. Why? Because one they clean the deposits out that are left behind with dinosaur oil. This makes the leak worst. Second the synthetic is much more "slippery" (as a non technical term) and will out flow conventional oil of the same weight. So once the leak opens up from the removal of the deposits, here comes the oil!!
The engine block stuff, oh my! LOL! So you are saying that the engine block material is so porus that fluids can leak through! NOT!
I would say that is BS! Maybe the pan gasket is poor and would leak with synthetics or maybe the machining is poor and the fit with the oilpan is very poor.
Do some research on your own. Do a search for synthetic oils on this BBS, you will find the topic discussed in length many times. Also check like the Amsoil homepage: http://www.amsoil.com

BULL-HIT.......I have used mobile 1 since 1000 miles, no leaks.....I have always used mobile one on my vehicles in the past...92 z28, 94 z28, 94 z71, 97 F150, 98 F150.....none of them leaked, including my current F150....why do corvettes come with synthetics from the factory......(no wonder they spin the tires so easy, all that oil leaking on the tires)

That's a crock of horse puckey. I've used synthetics for 15yrs with no problems. My dealership said that it was fine also. The block coating only promotes flow. I hope the oil does not leak through the small holes in my block (please..lol).

Man, talk about Urban Legends! I changed my bikes over to Mobile 1 after appx. 10K miles, I changed my wife's Explorer over at 72K miles, I changed my Dad's Oldsmobile over at 95K miles. NO PROBLEMS. The block isn't going to leak either. Synthetic is a slicker and better oil, the only thing you might consider is seeing to it that the motor (engine) is broken in first. After the first 1000 miles you should be just fine.
Sheesh.

Moonpa,
Might as well "pile on" here too. Find another Ford dealer and mechanic. These stories get better all the time. These "Shop Managers" are from the "Twilight Zone" or smoke a joint before work........
Many dealers, not only Ford, offer "Quick Lube" services to customers using synthetics, including Mobil 1, to those who want it.
Every Ford dealer in my immediate area now offer Mobil 1 and many GM dealers too. There is NO warranty voided using synthetics as long as you use the proper weight oil and it meets Ford specs which includes all the popular brands ....... end of story! There is no rebuttal ......

Are you using the "V-Twin" Mobil 1 or the car stuff? Whichever one do you see lower temps and better performance? Just wondering, read an article on the new Mobil stuff in American Iron Magazine. But I don't know anyone who uses it.
