coolant in the sparkplug cavity
Great place for info. However I have not heard of this one. On three occaions now I have had coolant or water in the # 8 sparkplug cavity. This is causing the plug to short out and run on 7. I have the 4.6L made in Romeo, MI. It has 130,000 miles and runs strong with this one exception. It is costing me $130 at the dealer for them to fix this everytime with no word on what is causing this. I, unfortunately, have a so-so local dealer that I am not all that impressed with. However, they do a nice wash and vacumn for that $130. This happens when it rains as well. Any Ideas???????
Hi dmailmain & welcome!
Haven't heard of this on the 4.6L engine. The 5.4's have been know to have a coolant leak from the heater hoses. Since they have coil packs on each plug, the coil gets shorted out. You didn't say what year your truck is, so I'm assuming that, with 130,000 miles, it's a pre- '99 model? If so, then you don't have the coil packs to worry about.
To start with, you need to find where the coolant is coming from. Then, you can work on sealing the plug recess. My factory plug wires seal up tighter than a fish's butt. If you are being charged multiple times for the "fix", be sure to tell them you want the leak fixed and the plug area sealed! If you just tell them to change the plug, that's all they'll do.

dmailman...
I have a '97 with the 4.6 (Romeo) and at around 45k miles I was experiencing poor acceleration and a rough idle, finaly, the check engine light came on.
The dealer found no trouble codes but discovered that ALL the plugs on the left (driver's side) bank were rusted. I opted to have all the plugs and wires replaced and have not had another problem since.
I don't know why the plugs were rusted and I've been checking for moisture in the plug recesses at every fill up since then and have never noticed any.
I know this doesn't help much but that was my experience.

OK.... I have just come back in from drying out #8 sparkplug cavity. It had coolant in it. I can't tell in my service manual that I have if there is coolant going into the intake manifold back there around the cavity. If there is, there is a probabilty that I have a leaking intake gasket there.Does anyone have info on this??????
Please.
