300 horsepower
Engines from that era wouldn't have the restrictions imposed by emmissions standards of the later models, most likely accounting for the performance difference. Just a thought...

The older 300 c.i.d. are very restrictive. I have a 86, that one barrel is a little more than an inch in diameter. It also has two cats.
Just wondering, Ford man, if you knew the torque on the 86 300 c.i.d.

With a little tlc and some speed parts the 300 really comes to life. With my exhaust and K&N i noticed a serious jump in power. One of my friends has an early 300 w/dual outlet header, cold air intake, K&N, MSD 6a ignition and a 4 barrel intake manifold w/a holly 390cfm carb. He said it peaks at 260hp and over300lbs of torque.
