I want the 5.4 PIN (power improved by Neal).

Damn. If only that was a factory available engine.

Unhappy

Neal, Where did you get the info regarding the driver side valve cover decal? When doing my pre-purchase research I loked at and test drove quite a few Expys (over 80) and I never came across this.

You got me wondering about mine so I had to take a look, and then a look at my work truck, and then . . . .

My 99 Expy 5.4L, built 8-99 owners manual claims 260 HP & 350 Lb-Ft, the decal has NO "PI" in large letters. The largest letters on the decal is "54L". Could mine be just a very strong example of the "OLD" 5.4? I ask because she pulls like no other 97, 98 or early 99 that I've been in.

My work truck, 2001 F-150 5.4L, built 11-00 owners manual also claims 260 HP & 350 Lb-Ft. Once again the decal does not have a "PI" and will out run many a "modified" (chips, intakes & CAT Backs) 97 and 98 models.

I then went to a dealer and looked under several "new truck" hoods (F-150 & Expys) never came across a "PI" on a decal.

Still wondering and thinking that maybe the decal only listed "PI" on model year 99 I went our local "CARMAX" lot and looked under still more hoods, no "PI" to be found.

Does anybody know what the real story is on the Identifacation of this motor by the average owner without a VIN decoder is?

petrol.

i am still very confused about this myself. the last advice i got sounds good but i have not tried it yet.

take your front passenger wheel off. get in the wheel well and and look on the side of the head near the front, just below the valve cover. cast into the aluminum of the cylinder head it will have the letters "PI" if it is in fact performance improved. let me know if this helps.

Cool

HI!... Sorry about the confusion. I just checked my DRIVER's side valve cover and all it says is "555" 02-11-99 54L". I could of sworn I saw it say "P.I" on there but I was mistakin. Sorry guys. Even "H.P FREAKS" make mistakes! Like I said on F-150 WORLD, check your passenger's side cylinder head towards the front, under the valve cover. Mine has "P.I" cast right into the aluminum on the head. And "YES" I double checked mine this time! LOL!

Talking Got Your HP Right Here

Well I rotated my tires to day and while I had the front passanger side off I looked to see what I could find on the cylinder head just as Neal & Blove had suggested.

Well there it was, though hard to see as the letters are pretty small and under what appears to be the part number cast into the head in letters about 1/8" high just above the second exhaust port back from the front and appears as follows:

RF-XL3E-6090-CZOD
PI

Petrol
5.4L PI, 3.73 LS
