Second 4.2l engine trouble
Please help! I'm on my second 4.2l engine and now I'm noticing a white residue on the bottom of my oil cap. This is similar to what I saw when my engine died the first time. The dealer checked it out and said my pcv valve was stuck open and allowing moisture in. 143 miles later (with new oil) I'm seeing the residue still. Anyone else notice this??? I have quite a story about my first engine but I'll save that for some other time, Thanks in advance for any help.

Wow, a problem with the 4.2L engine. So far, besides coolant leaks / gasket problems I haven't heard any complaints about the v6. Try posting in the V6 board, you'll get a lot of help there. Be sure to keep us posted.

mytruck: I understand your concern after having an engine replacement. I believe what you are seeing however is normal for this time of year. Condensation can form on the inside of anything which has been heated up and then allowed to cool in cold, damp weather. Would suggest looking at the cap after an extended trip where the engine has been allowed to heat up enough to evaporate the moisture out of the oil. If it is of any consolation, I have had many VW air cooled Beetles which always could be counted on to have the white foam under the cap, caused by stop and start driving in the winter months. It was often hard to get them up to operating temps when the weather was at 10 degrees or so, and most of trips were in town driving. If your antifreeze level is staying the same, don't sweat it yet...Spring will be here soon! j.b.
