Post ENGINE OR TRANSMISION LEAK?

'99 F 150 4x4 extended cab with 5.4 Today, ss I was was changing my oil at 13,000 and going to Mobil's 5w30 Tri-Synthetic for the first time ever in using a synthetic I was somewhat excited that I was giving my beauty the best care I possible could. I had noticed for the first time, oil leaking in between the 2 oil pans. I'M NO MACHANIC and don't even know what the part is called that had oil all over it but it's silver and the part with the squares indented in it and has a rubber gasket directly on the bottom and a large sheetmetal plate is bolted on to the front. No oil has been on the driveway pavement so I never knew it leaked but at times, I noticed a burnt smell from time to time but never got underneath my truck. Stupid me, I need to kick myself in the rear anyway. I also noticed dried up oil on the right side of the oil pan along that long thick square part that runs up into the engine. Anyway, can someone tell me what those two parts may be? I also needed to have a new valve cover put in months ago as my new truck had a crack in it and has since then been fixed. Also, I needed a new steering box 2 weeks after my purchase. My truck was purchased new, with 418 miles on it. I wonder what that was all about. Sorry for the lenght of my post And if someone can answer me on this one before 12 noon Tuesday, I'd appreciate it.

You've probably got the dreaded passenger side leaking head gasket. My symptoms were exactly the same.

-Burnt oil smell after driving.
-Oil residue on bell housing.
-NO oil on the driveway.

Mine is in the shop getting repaired. See other threads in this Forum for more info.

Sorry to hear that somebody else also has this problem.

Most likely you have the oil leak problem. Look underneath your truck again on the passenger side where the cylinder head sits on the block. If you see oil, it's probably the head.
Mine started leaking at 24K miles and thought it was the oil pan gasket. On mine it had oil all over the starter and leaking onto the header/y-pipe connection. I took it to Ford on the 12/18. They acknowledged the problem and told me they would have to remove the engine. "It's alot easier," they said. In the meantime, they replaced two coil packs, and accidently cracked the intake manifold. They replaced it with a new one but I had to wait two days extra. Honestly, I didn't care if they took out the engine, provided they fix it right the first time.
I got the truck back on 12/26. No leaks or oil burning smell yet. Plus it runs alot smoother. Good luck on your quest.

Yea, unfortunately it sounds like you have the all too common "Passenger Side Head Gasket Leak"!!! All of the stories sound the same.
Burning oil smell:
Oil not hiting the ground:
Exhaust coated with oil:
Bell housing coated with oil:

I know, because i finally put mine in the shop today with only 19k to have my head gasket (head?) replaced...

Go ahead and make an appointment. When i dropped mine off today, they told me that it might be tommorrow before they could start...They had two engine to get finished with first...

Best of luck...Keep us up to date with your problems...

Funny how you found it!
The first time I smelled oil burning, it was at night, so I could'nt see the leak. Instead, I logged on to this site, did a search for "oil leak", read about all the problems others were having, took out my flashlight, and confirmed that I had written a really long sentence..err I mean found the leak.
THIS SITE ROCKS!
