Another EGR question
Is it possible for the EVR valve to be bad but your check engine light wouldnt come on? I am sure there is no vacumn going to the EGR valve from the EVR and I tested the EVR valve according to the limited directions I have and cant get the valve to open up. I also notice a loud moaning sound coming from it when I shut off the engine. What gives with the computer not showing a check engine light? I notice an occasional rough idle and some pinging (mainly low rpms). Could the DPFE be fooling the truck into thinking everything is fine?
Thanks Crash!,
I changed the EVR today and it runs good again. Its strange that it suddenly failed (started moaning). I pulled it apart and it was FULL of dirt. I guess I'm lucky it was only a $25 part.

A $25 part? I called three different Ford dealers in my area and was quoted around $60 for an EGR valve ('98 5.4L).
The "moaning" that you describe is probably coming from the EGR vacuum solenoid. When you turn off the engine, the solinoid slowly discharges which causes the sound. I believe the sound is normal.
As the other fellow pointed out, EGR only operates during cruising speeds. EGR is completely disengaged at at idle, under load, and at WOT. You cannot see (or feel) the EGR valve open if you apply vacuum to it... it's completely sealed. The only way to see it open is to remove the valve and apply vacuum. Also, if you apply vacuum to the valve while the truck is at idle, the truck should start to run really rough as the valve opens. Releasing vacuum should return to a smooth idle.
The $25 part that you replaced is probably the EGR vacuum solenoid (the device that actually operates the EGR valve).

Sorry to ask a dumb question here -- In the previous posts -- there is mention of a "EGR" and a "EVR" -- Is this a typo or are these two different things??

EVR refers to the EGR vacumn soleniod. It was referred to as EVR in the Chiltons manual. The exact meaning of the acronym isnt clear to me either, it may well be a typo. I got a check engine light and heard a loud moaning sound coming from it at all times. I took the old one apart and it was full of dirt. I installed a new one and that fixed her up real nice.
AFTER ALMOST A YEAR OF TRYING TO FIX MY TRUCK AND ALOT OF MILES LATER THE DEALER FINALLY CHANGED THE EGR VALVE AND MY TRUCK IS RUNNING GOOD. IT'S BEEN TWO WEEK SO FAR AND ALL'S WELL. GOOD LUCK
