Unhappy ELectric Fan Wiring Help!

O.K. what a disaster. I got my brand new Ford Crown Vic fan from Houston Performance (or at least I think it is a Crown Vic Fan, maybe it is a Linc. Mrk8 fan, any difference?), I got my Hayden Fan Controller #3647 the one with A/C, adjustable thermostat, etc., and all of the misc. supplies. Well I got my fan installed and I even made a custom bracket for the bottom of the fan, that was the easy part. Even taking off the mechanical fan was no big deal. The problem began when I tried to wire the fan to the Hayden unit. My first obstacle was that the fan doesn't come with a plug, so I got one from my local parts place. The plug was an aftermarket plug designed for this fan. Plug had a heavy gauge blue top wire, a smaller gauge brown center wire, and another heavy gauge black wire on the bottom (this wire was slightly smaller in gauge than the blue wire. Now not having a wiring diagram for this Ford fan I assumed that the large black wire was the ground and that the center wire was for the low speed circuit positive. After wiring the fan to the controller it didn't work. I even started my truck and got the radiator up to temp. and played with the adjustable thermostat and I could hear and feel the relay in the Hayden controller switching on and off. So I switched the ground wire to the other blue wire on the plug for the fan figuring that maybe the blue wire was the ground and not the black. That didn't work as well. Then I switched the center positive wire from the Hayden to the outside large black wire on the plug and then it worked, but the fan seemed to be on the high speed circuit (it was really pulling hard) and I didn't want to blow a fuse. So I tried putting the ground back on the large black wire on the plug, the positive (the fused orange Hayden positive) back on the middle plug wire, and then I put the Hayden secondary power wire (the non-fused blue power wire) onto the large gauge outside wire on the fan plug. Then the fan worked and it seemed to be on the slow speed setting. So I figured great but after zip tying and making it all nice it just stopped working. No burnt wires, no blown fuses, and now the Hayden doesn't switch on or off when I try to adjust the thermostat. I even tried to wire the controller so that it is always hot to the battery (no switched power) still no success. I figure that I have ruined my Hayden unit but still I don't understand what I did wrong with connecting the Hayden to the fan and why I couldn't find the low speed circuit on the fan. I know that it is a mouth full but this has been a source of extreme frustration and I now have completely removed everything and have the mech. fan back in. Please help!

sorry i can't help, but

Can you tell me how you mounted the fan to the radiator/sheet metal? Pictures of your brackets would help if possible.

I bought a Flex a lite Fan and it already had the wires running. I'm sorry you're having your problems. My fan only had a hot and a ground coming out of it. I know it's not much help, but try disregarding the skinny wire. Just run the hot and ground. Hot from the fan goes to the battery. You should have a ground from the module and a hot from the module. Really it should be ignition, but running it to the battery is just as good. Also, flexalite has a wiring diagram of their module that I am too using. Here's the website: http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/inst...s/250instr.pdf

Hope this helps. Hope we can help each other

Joel

Matt90GT Can Help!

He installed his CV fan and my Mark 8 fan and neither of us have had a problem. He should be able to help you out. He should be along shortly. If not, send me an email and I can forward your question onto him.

Question about your Hayden controller

Does your controller have a built in 30 amp relay or is it the type of controller that is designed to use a seperate relay?
