Angry Freakin Oil Change

Are they FREAKIN CRAZY!?!?!?!?!?!

OK, I am about fit to be tied. I got my 02 Screw in November. Dealer threw in the first oil change, no problem, had it done at the 3000 mile mark.

On the thought process of, I can do my own oil change as I have always done on all my vehicles in the past, I prepare and go and get a "better" oil filter and 6 quarts of my own choice oil (Mobil-1, 5-30)

Pull the truck in, drain the oil and as per threads on the site, I turn my wheels to the right and go in a unscrew the filter, OR SO I FREAKIN THOUGHT!!!!!!!!!! I have read many posts about the first ioil change and the nightmares of getting the filter off, well, one of 2 things happened here. The dealer is just as simple as the factory and torqued the filter down so tight, or the dealer never replaced the filter and I dealt with the factory musclejerk!!!!!!!! THIS WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD doing a SIMPLE oil change. You can't get any type of equipment in the filter area, and if you do, there is no way to move it around in there. I even had removed the tire TRYING to get alittle more room (GREAT jack they give ya... NOT!!!!!!!) Maybe I am just alittle frustrated right now, but that was insane. Is it there goal to make it more difficult so you DO take it to a dealer?????? MAN< I still cannot believe it!!!

If anyone has any suggestions on an easier way to do this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, pass them along to me!!!

Oh, the little "drain pan" that catches all the oil coming from the filter DID HELP, but I do not know how easy it will be to clean up. I would hate to leave it oily, I think it would be a magnet for dirt/grime over time. I just soaked it with degreaser, I am going out to clean up now!!!!

Thanks in adavance for any suggestions!!!

I'd be willing to bet 10 bucks that the dealer didn't change the filter.

If you can jam a screw driver i the side of the filter you can use it as a handle to unscrew the filter.

joeeyo, have your Ford parts man order the the parts for the remote filter that was standard equipment on the 98 and (I think early 99) F-150's and Expeditions. It fits perfectly. The filter is relocated to the left frame rail, right behind the bumper. No more oil filter hassels.

If you do any serious off roading or driving through mud bogs, then this may not be the best idea. There is always the possibility of something poking a hole in your filter.

On my 2000 I crawl under from the front. I can get a good look at the filter so I can snake a a strap wrench up there to get the filter off.

I tried a strap wrench with no room to move it once the strap was around the filter, I also considered the screw driver, but again, NO ROOM TO MOVE!!!!!

I am sure there are harder oil changes in MANY vehicles, but this is one BRAINDEAD design!!!! At least on most you can get under the vehicle and get a good grip with both hands!!!!

I think the remote filter and fumomo valve is the way to go!!!!

Months ago, someone suggested lining the drip pan below the filter with aluminum foil to make clean up easier. I've done that twice now, and it does keep oil off the truck. Takes some patience slipping the foil between the filter and the pan. If you shape the foil just right, spills will run into the container, and not all over your arm, shirt, and floor

it seems to me that most places put the filters on dry, that is bad. Did the filter you took off have any writing on it? there are three diffrent types, plain white filter, fl-820-s, and mo-2. what kind was on it.

I have a metal band/strap wrench that has a pivoting handle to any position...

It works great...

A sandwich bag around the filter works as a catch pan as well...

I would not punture the filter with a screwdriver ever..I had to deal with one of those before after someone butchered it...it was not fun!!!

Hey,

I changed the oil in my mom's expedition. It took me a while to simply find the damn filter, but when i did, it was located behind the front bumper on the drivers side. It wasnt too bad to change either.

Am i correct in saying this is NOT the stock location of the filter? This Expedition is a 97 and it was a demo model we bought cause it was a bit cheaper.

just did my first oil change on my '02 4x4. i would have to agree with others your dealer probably didn't take off the original one.
but what i did to get mine was first try socket type wrench...no good. then cheap metal strap type filter wrench.... no good but i seen it move just the slightest, then i went to autozone and got a new metal strap type wrench with a short(6in) handle and three sets of nipples inside the band for traction. ah filter is off in less then one minute. hang filter wrench handle straight down from filter and push towards front diff, with just enough clearance.
i believe the manufacturer of the wrench was OEM. and the cost was like $3. excellent investment considering how beat up my hands got from trying the other methods. they also had one with a pivot handle but i just got the straight handle and it worked great.
