Question Computer relearning idle?

I had my 97 4x4 4.6L to the dealer yesterday for the replacement of the intake manifold gaskets ( had a small leak at front of motor) and they unhooked the battery for the repair and now my truck does not idle at the same rpm's. Does the computer have to relearn this and how long does it take? It used to idle around 600 in drive and now it is roughly 500. Please advise.
Thanks...

Yep, it should idle better after about 50 miles.

Hi Dennis,

I agree, this shouldn't be anything to worry about, as within 50-100 miles, and many times sooner, the PCM will "re-learn" it's idle characteristics, and things will be back to normal.

Good luck!

I never measured the mileage, but mine generally takes several weeks to get back to normal after disconnecting the battery. Along with the varying idle, mine also stalls when I stop.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The idle is still not back to normal. I have only driven about 21 miles since the repair.I thought it was going to quit today when puling into my driveway the rpm's fell below 500 but it kept running.
Thanks.

In all of my F-150s after disconnecting the battery (to install the Superchip), my idle was back to normal very quickly..50 miles max)...and I have never experienced a severe rough idle as you described (dropping below 500 rpm).

Keep driving it as much as possible..if it continues past a reasonable mileage (100 miles)..I would take it back in. Nothing major just yet....

Good luck!
