Question Coolant leak .

I have a 97 with the 4.6 and I have smelled coolant lately. I noticed a small amount of antifreeze in the V of the engine under the intake manifold. Has anyone had a coolant leak in this location? Does anyone know what the fix would be? I have almost 49K on the odo. Please advise.
Thanks.

Dennis,
You may have the same problem that I just experienced. My truck started running on 7 cylinders. When I told the mech. at the dealership he knew right off what the problem was which tells me it may be fairly common. Water dripping from the heater hose onto the #4 cylinder coil. This in turn shorted out the coil. The coil - labor cost $255. Luckly warranty covered it.
I had never noticed the leak but had just completed a 3 hour drive so it didn't take long to short out the coil.

Hope this helps
Mark

My BEST guess would be a coolant leak on the intake manifold...we call this gasket that seal's this location a "battle ship" gasket and is very common on the older vihicles to leak.

This is just MT BEST guess though....best thing to do is do a "REAL GOOD DETAILED" engine shampoo, let the truck idle for an hour or so while keeping an eye open for a leak in the location you had mentioned. Engines get nice and hot with good pressure on idle...and this is most likely when you will see this leak happen.

I have a 98 with a 4.6.I have changed the
thermostat twice,on another chips' recommendation. Both times the lost coolant has run into the same area you are talking about. Check around the back
of the stat housing, you might have a bad
gasket or a hose clamp problem in that area. Look for any green or white discoloration around the stat housing also. good luck,,,,,98

Thanks for the replys, I have looked around the engine some more and I am pretty sure it is the manifold gasket leaking in the area underneath the thermostat housing.Does not appear to be thermostat gasket.Anyone have any idea what it would cost to have this fixed? Have not really noticed any drop in coolant in the overflow tank.
Thanks
