Cool V6 V.S. V8

OK, I hear a lot of people that have been putting the v6 down. Most of them are v8 owners. The 4.2 is rated at 205hp, 4.6 at 220, and 5.4 at 260. Just by adding a superchip to a 4.2 you will have more hp then the 4.6 engine. I have 2 F-150 4.2 trucks. The slower of the two can beat a stock 5.4 hands down. I say the slowest because one of them has a lot of engine mods to it and the other just has the normal after market mods to it. My other faster 4.2 could probably beat a corvette. I got a few things on it that are not on the market yet. I had to have them modified to fit my truck. Most of it you can get from the mustang mods, but you have to do some machining to get them to fit on our trucks. With a little bit of elbow grease they work out very well. And you will flat fly. I have had my truck on a dyno. Here are some numbers. 322hp at 4500 rpm with 390 torque. This was done at the flywheel but the hp at the wheels is probably more like 290. I had a dyno graph around here somewhere. When I find it I will post it. Anyway, I have a lot more to do with this truck. I would like to break the 400hp barrier. Can you believe this is all from a 4.2 V6? The other 4.2 with just a few mods on it still kicks butt! Once it gets its revs going anyway. The other one is just a project that my Dad and I work on together. He is a Professional mechanic and he has a lot of connections in finding all this stuff to go on this truck. He knows a hell of a lot more about it then me. The title is still in my name though! lol. We were going to get a 5.4 but we decided to go with the 4.2 so we could brag about how much power we can get from it. If it were a 5.4, people would just nod and say, "that’s nice". With a 4.2 people are like "holy sh*t, that’s only a 6"! We haven’t done anything to the outside of the truck other then a custom hood. That hood was only because there was not enough space under there for what we needed. We call it the sleeper truck. That’s because when someone wants to race, it wakes up! Other then that it looks like a regular F-150. I guest this post is just my statement of opinion. I had to vent some frustrations on the people who knock on the 4.2 engines. Don’t get me wrong, overall you can get more hp out of the v8 because you have more hp to start with. But you stock guys with the v8 better watch out for are modified 4.2 liters of fury...lol. And yes, the v8's are great engines. I would just like a little more respect for the v6 guys.

Cool

I only have 2 experiences with the 4.2

1) I have a 97 F-150 4x4 EC SB 4.6 Auto and my buddy has a 99 F-150 5 sp 4.2 2 wheel drive SB . . . well the inevitable happened . . . we raced and I won (I do have K&N and cat-back . . . his is stock). It wasn't by a huge margin (2 or 3 trucks) but considering the weight difference in our trucks I was suprised that I won . . . he couldn't keep up once my engine started to get in it's power band.

2) I also rode in his truck and I was quite impressed with the engine . . . it felt like it pulled very strongly and had lots of umph once it got into its power range.

If I bought a 2 wheel drive I wouldn't hesitate getting the 4.2 . . . with a heavy 4x4 I'd stick with the 4.6

But it was a good engine and you are correct . . . it does pull more than I thought it would. Those are some amazing numbers your getting out of your engine, keep it up !

Question

Fordsport, just a quick question. You said that you dynoed your engine at the flywheel. How exactly did you do that? Every dyno run I've ever heard about was done at the rear wheels and then gets extrapolated for the HP at the crank. Not doubting you, just curious.

Redshift you may be right. My Dad put the truck on the dyno at his friends shop. Maybe I just had it backwards. We are getting ready to put it back on with the Supercharger. I will have some updated numbers.

Wink

Fordsport, You got the flywheel vs. rear wheels wrong, so I think I'll question your numbers: 322HP, 390 torque? From a 4.2 that isn't blown? I hate to deviate from the normally civillized decorum on this message board, but, I've got to tell you that you are full of sh*t. You say 322HP, maybe get your daddy to open the hood for you to see if there isn't a blown 5.4 in there.

Ok I believe , ( really I want to)
BUT it would help if you posted a detailed list of mods, and what is the approxiamate or dynoed gain.
If you completely rebuilt it like a Race engine, fully ported polished, race cams piston etc. sure it's possible.($$$)
But with simple bolt ons other than NOS, Blower, two more cylinders etc. I'm finding myself wanting to believe but doubting.
so I guess what we all want to know is how so that we may benifit from the experience, Or maybe enlighten you a little bit as to the possible inacuracies.

FordSport, Yes the v-6 does make some impressive horsepower if you have an empty truck and are not towing anything. I had a Dodge ram with the v-6 but pulling a grade like the Grapevine with my 1200 lb. tent trailer the pedal had to be to the metal and hope some idiot going slower didn't ruin my momentum. My '97 with 4.6 pulls that same trailer up that grade at about 1/4 throttle and if I have to slow for some idiot 1/2 throttle for a while and I'm back up to speed not to mention get almost the same mileage as the v-6. So it just seems to be a matter of preference that is up to the individual, but as long as we keep choosing Fords the more they make and more common they become maybe our parts will become as inexpensive as GM parts ro maybe cheaper!

The grand nationals were before I was into high performance. But how could one forget the cyclones & typhoons(blazer version of typhoon). If I remember correctly, the cyclone could beat a vette.

Lightningcrashz-you are correct, the grand nationals and cyclones would outrun a vett in their day and would probably embarress them still today. Dont know if you ever go to your local drag strip, but you can still find a few grand nationals tearing everybodys a$$ up!! esp. if they have any mods. And its only a v-6!!!(turbocharged of course)Im depressing myself talking about
gm vehicles!! catch yall later.
