Why is the oil filter such a pain in the a$$?
[whine mode=on]
Went to change the oil and filter on my new truck tonight. I had looked at the filter location and thought it would be more difficult then my '97 (it had the remote filter under the front bumper) but nothing I couldn't handle. Wrong! What a pain. Not only did the assembly worker torque it to what seemed like 200 ft/lbs but the location... what a joke!
Why did they get rid of the remote filter. That was such a great idea. Now, if you can get the stinking filter off, the oil drips down the plastic cover all night long!

Its not that hard.I just drive mine to the shop and say change the oil.Really doesn't get any easier than that.I have a friend who has a f150 w/the 5.4 and he tried to change the oil and filter at 3,000 miles. he did manage to get it done but he has had the shop do it every time since then because it is a royal pain.
i am the guy in the shop, belive me those are not the worst fords to change, try a sohc explorer, it sprays oil all over the lower contol arm and u get covered in the process, unless u have a brand new one as ford now angled the drain plug, keep complaining to ford and maybe they will bring back the remote filter, it will sure make my life easier
I have to agree with blk150off**, i own both a 99 F150 5.4 and a sohc explorer and the F150 is a pain, but the explorer makes a complete MESS. It shoots oil out almost directly horizontal for the first few seconds. Just enough to coat the control arm and accessories... Then you have to wipe everything down....

kkirt1, I know what you mean about that filter location. The first time i did it
it took 20min just to figure out where to
lay under there and how to get the filter
wrench on. Just did my third change two
weeks ago and only took about 5min to get
the filter off this time. Once you learn
the tricks it gets easier.

KT,
So what are the tricks? I have bought three different types of oil wrenches, each time hoping that it will make the job easier. I end up using my old wrench, but I can only turn it enough that I can see that it moved.
1. Loosen wrench
2. Reposition wrench
3. Barely move the filter
4. Cuss and swear at Ford
5. Repeat cycle

Huckster, The filter wrench i use is the flexable steel band type that swivels side
to side. I am not sure where i picked it up
at i have had it forever. You can only turn
it about 1/4 turn each time but once it
turns loose you can do the rest by hand.
When i go under the truck i go in head
first from the front laying next to the
tire, You will most likely have to use
both hands to get the wrench on because
of some sensor and wire right in the way.
I dont know if this helps any but its the
easiest way i have found.
Note: Your steps 1-5 will most likely
still apply.

I change my own oil, and I do the filter by hand. if you need a filter wrench, the filter is too tight, or the gasket was not lubed. I never need a wrench for anything other than the drain plug. Just tighten the filter as tight as you can by hand.
On the Exploder and others where the oil comes out horizontally, take a piece of cardboard, bend it into a "V" shape, and use it to direct the oil into the drain pan. This also works with the filter.

It's painfully obvious that you guys are bitchin' because you've never changed the filter on a Linc Mk8. The wrench barely fits. You can only crank it ~1/16 revolution from slap to slap before the handle hits some object. I guarantee you--if you overtighten, you're F**d the next time. It will leak half the filter's capacity even after waiting overnight. F*d On Raw Deal doesn't half explain Quality Job None, and yet it still beats any other US OEM.
That cardboard trick for the SOHC explorers works like a charm... Buy a case of oil, and the box is good for at least 2 oil changes! :-) Works great! I think I get the suggestion from here, actually. :-)

Amsoil makes an excellent bypass kit that allows you to run two oil filters in a remote location.
The great thing about this kit is that you can use any number of combinations of filters. The BE series will filter particles down to 1 micron compared to factory filters that at best filter down to 25 microns. I have the original kit, but the latest kit offers mostly cosmetic and mounting improvements. It sells for around $200.

Perma-Cool makes a great relocation kit. I have one on my truck. Cost was around $45.00 plus you use the full size Quart filter, like The FL-1A for more oil. My truck holds 6.5 Quarts now. But I went to the Ford Racing filter on my truck. The number is FL-1HP this filter costs more but is a better one in my book,Cost $10.00. The kit came from Jeg`s out of Ohio.
