5.4L slight hesitation/surging at 1500 RPM
My 1998 5.4L with 40K miles is starting to show very slight hesitation/surging at about 1500 RPM. It's especially noticeable at 35-40 MPH... the engine runs rough and hesitates and surges slightly. The problem occurs in Park/Neutral as well, so it's not a drivetrain issue.
I plan to replace my spark plugs this weekend with NGK TR55VX Platinum plugs, and run a few bottles of fuel-system cleaner through it (I use the Techron stuff). I've recently cleaned my TB which did not help.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Could I possibly have a bad O2 sensor? What are the symptoms of a bad O2 sensor? How much do they cost and should I blindly replace them?

bluecrab...let us know how the plug change goes, I also need to do this, but every time I look at the fuel rails and coil packs I put it off, I may end up taking it to the dealer to have them replaced. I haven't checked into the price of the dealer replacing them yet. Let me know of any special swivels, etc. that are needed to get to the back plugs. Good Luck!
Bluecrab,
My truck had the same symptons until I cleaned the butterfly valve. All you have to do, is to disconnect the air intake tube from the injection unit and spray the valve with a fuel injection cleaner and then carefully wipe the valve clean with a cloth baby diaper or a clean rag. Try it if you get a chance. It worked in my case. Bugman.
