How do I PROPERLY disconnect the speedometer?
I tried to disconnect the speedometer from my truck, however when I did, it would only go from high gear to overdrive, it would not go into the first couple of gears. I have a 4.6 V8, with an automatic transmission, I crawled under the truck and pulled the wire, but like I said it coused the truck to act funny while driving, please advise me as to how to disconnect it and make it drive normal.*

The speedometer is a magnetic pickup connection at the transmission. If you disconnect it there, it will not effect the computer or the truck running normal. I know. I had a pickup at the transmission go out on a 98 model F150 I had. Ran fine, but no speedometer. I don't think anything with that has changed in the new models.
Why would unhook the speedo, other than to fool someone buying your truck from you that it has low miles??? This smacks of shady used car salesman tactics, What's the deal with the unhooking of the speedo??Hmmmm??
oh yeah, what's the vin? I wouldn't want any fellow site members to buy this truck.

Ford's a lot smarter these days.
The computer can't operate the vehicle properly without the speed input and if I'm not mistaken, if you remove the wire between the speedometer/odometer it won't work either.

Had a friend try that with his '96 and suprise suprise. The truck wouldn't start with the speedo dissconected.

Had a friend of a friend tell me that he went to the junk yard and pulled a computer and stuck it in his rig and let that computer rack up the mileage. I am a little sceptiable about that though, not sure that would work. Anyone know anything about this? Doesn't bother me though, I keep and maintain my vehicles until the wheels fall off.

DO NOT cut any wires going to the speedometer. When the engine is started the computer will sense that the speedometer wire has been tampered with. Check engine light will come on. The computer will have a tamper code that can only be cleared by Ford. Also at which time your warranty will be voided. If it is not cleared by Ford the check engine light stays on. The next time it is connected to a ford diagnostic machine that code will appear again. If it was a legitimate code your dealer would have entered it into the ford vehicle maintenance record system. Ford had to come up with a way of knowing if the odometer had been tampered with because of the millions of lease vehicles.

No-no or not, it can be done... speeding is against the law, as is drinking and driving, rolling through a stop sign, murder, etc.... you get the picture. Now, back to the original question... You don't mention what year it is, but on the 97-8, you could pull the fuse out for the cluster and kill the speedo. (Granted, it killed the other guages too, but...) You could also wire in a switch with a fuse to switch the cluster on and off. The 97s and 98s still shifted and ran normally, cruise control included, without the IC, and, if for some odd reason, a code ever DID show up, all you would need to say is that you were wiring in a wire for your radar detector/cell phone/CB radio/(insert electronic device here) and shorted the wires, thereby blowing the fuse. How could they argue that point???
Now, Jeff, since you work on them, where does the truck actually keep track of the mileage... is it stored in the GEM and displayed on the IC, or does the gem simply process the signal and send it out to the display? (Basically, where are the numbers stored at? I know with the mechanical ones on the 97-98, it was obviously right at the IC, but I'm curious about the newer ones wiht the digital readout... Also, does that hold true for other Fords as well?
