Common? Leaking Antifreeze....I think?
ok this happened a while back but i am still wondering about it
ok eveytime i get out of my truck in the summer and somtimes winter i can smell antifreeze real bad since it was brand new
i took it up and talked to them and they said they tightened the hoses so i drove it home and ince again it smelled
when my truck got to around 16,000 miles
it burnt a coil...i took it to get it fixed under the warranty, they replaced it and said there was an antifreeze leak in the hose and it dripped on the coil till the coil burnt out causing some hellacious looking flames coming out of my cowl hood (before the Navigator front end)
I LOVE FIRE....But Not Coming Out Of My Truck!!!!!!!!!
so they fixed it and they tightened all the hoses, but it still smells of antifreeze real bad
to this day it still smells of antifreeze '
maybe it is due to weak hoses or something..but has this happened before
how do u fix it?
after i get the outside done im going to pay attention to the engine compartment and all the hoses will be replace with stainless stell braided ones ....but till then?
oh and i have NEVER found any sign of antifreeze leaking around the motor and no liquids dripping anywhere!
Thanx

Thats what the dealer said, that it was probably a leak and they would tighten the hoses. I didn't see any antifreeze or evidence of any leaks. But I did just deatil my engine a couple of days ago. I also had installed the Superchip just days before this happened.
If you're not seeing any puddles, and you're refilling your reservoir, it's not leaking. If you have to periodically replenish the coolant, you're leaking.
Next question? Where?
The best thing to do is buy a pressure tester or rent one from a local auto parts store. (Pep Boys and Murrays in the midwest, JC Whitney sells them too) First, set it up cold and pressurize the system and let it sit. if the guage pressure begins to leak down, you have a leak somewhere. Look for the puddle. If not, start it up and let it come up to normal operating temp and pressure. Then slightly overpressurize the system and look for the puddle or steam.
If the puddle happens cold, you can trace it back. If not, what could be happening is that when whatever is leaking gets hot, it warps or expands allowing the coolant to leak. When it's cold, the leak is able to reseal itself. It's possible that the leak is falling on something hot (e.g. the exhaust) and you'll never see a puddle when it's hot. If it leaks when it's cold, it'll leave a puddle. If it leaks when it's hot, it'll put off a little bit of steam or leave a puddle when you over-pressurize it. Make sense?
Another thought... (not necessary in your case) before you pressure test it, make sure it's clean under the hood... makes it easier to trace the fresh leak back.
As for your problem, I suspect the head or manifold is leaking down onto the exhaust manifold and burning it before it hits the ground. A pressure test should be able to tell you exactly where it's coming from.

ok i gorfot the most improtant thing i was going to add
i dont have to refill anything
all the reservoirs are at the normal fill point and it hasnt lowered a bit
??????????
and the next question is.... anyone ever hear of this.....????
oh and dwedap i think i read ur situation in another post
maybe ur altitude or climate or something just dont agree with the changes ... dont know

Another way to find a leak is to buy some UV dye made for cooling systems. It is available at your dealer. You can get this stuff for oil, trans fluid, and A/C systems also.
When it leaks, the dye leaks with it. A UV lamp (your dealer should have one) or a blacklite will reveal the leak.
Hope this helps.

ThePyroManiacKid,
I also have the same leak. It seems to be the headgasket. lay under your truck and look up at the rear of the right exhaust manifold. This is where mine is leaking.
It drips onto the exhaust pipe and burns off untill it cools then drips on floor of my garage.

Now's the time to get some of that UV die mentioned by Crash1. Run it for a week then take an oil sample and send it out for inspection. Have them scrutinize it for water/antifreeze in the oil.
Be careful with the pressure tester. If you do have a head-gasket leak -- and if you pressurize it a lot and let it set -- you could fill enough water in the cylinder to cause a no-no when it next comes on TDC.
Look for the oil leak (discussed elsewhere) on right cylinder head -- may be related.
Look for antifreeze on the rear of the intake where the hose crosses over a plug - some reports of water killing the coil have been discussed.
For belt-and-suspenders insurance -- add a bottle of Bars-Leaks(tm) to the radiator. That stuff really works!
Good luck -- and please post your results (nice truck for a 17-yr-old -- I would have died for something that nice when I was young).
