F150 engine swap?
I purchased a 85 F150 2wd cheap with a bad motor. Could someone please tell me what is involved to change the 351 to a straight 6? Will the tranny that is in there bolt up? Thanks for any help.
There doesn't seem to be a vast resource of knowledge or interest in the older trucks on this site. I've got a 1984 F150 and it took several weeks to get someone to reply to one of my questions. When it was answered it was a guess and not a concrete answer, but I still appreciated it nonetheless. I wish I knew the answer to your question, but I don't. I have only owned 2 Ford products and this is the first truck. Good luck, anyway.
Although I own all GM, this is my first adventure into a ford and this may be one of the reasons that I never bought one before. Seems that ford lovers are stuck on themselves. Thanks for your help, anyway. I'll get the answers eventually, but appearently not from this board.
Whoa there partner. This site is devoted to later model f150's. www.ford-trucks.com has a tremendous amount of information on your truck. You might check it out. I believe the tranny will bolt up to the 351. You'll probably need new motor mounts though. Good luck.
Oops, I misread. I believe the 300 will bolt up to the tranny.

An '85 would have a 351W. The M's were gone years before. I believe the M only had a 2 barrel carb stock, where the High Output version of the 351W had a 4 barrel.

I think 83 or 84 was the last year for the 351M, our 1983 F150 4x4 had one. Our 1985 302 is fuel injected and has more power than it did.
Wouldn't you just need to change the bell housing to put a 300 in it. I am not sure if you would have to or not.

To my knolodge the tranny should not be able to bolt up. Like general motors ford uses the same tranny for a lot of their veichles, but for each engine family the bell housing is diffrent so you would probably haft to find a junkyard tranny. Also I "think" the new motor mounts of the I6 will line up with the existing frame mount holes. depending on what kind of transmission you get the crossmember might haft to be moved and you might haft to get a diffrent length driveshaft. If I were you I would stay with the 351 engine then you would not haft to worry about anything bolting up or not. Also this may be a stupied question but why would you want to down size on your engine?
ALLFORD, that would depend on what kind of transmission he has. If it is a manual(5,4,or 3 speed) then yes the bell housing can be replaced, but if he has an automatic the bell housing is part of the entire transmission case which means that either the tranny would haft to be gutted end replaced into a new case or find a diffrent tranny.
