Question 5.4 FQR engine?

Due to piston slap and leaky head gaskets, they want to replace my 99 5.4 (manufactured 11/98) with an FQR (ford quality remanufactured) long block. What I have heard is that these aren't even rebuilt by Ford, but 3rd parties (which may be a good thing since Ford couldn't get it right the first time).

My problem is that I want a brand new, off the shelf 5.4 like my truck was originally supposed to be equipped. Ford tells me only if you're within the 12mo/12k miles, anything after is the FQR. My question to others is: has anyone successfully talked Ford into giving them a brand new engine instead of an FQR? If so, how did you do it, who did you talk to, etc, etc? And also, how do you tell and new one from an FQR?

Thanks everyone.

They're supposed to use a FQR if it's out of the factory warranty. If it's still inside the 3/36, you should be getting a new engine. I had 27k on my 98 Explorer when I got my NEW 2000 engine last December... Loooong story for another board...
By the way... FQR is A-OK with me... usually they just get a short-block,with heads and build it back up.

My dealer told me only current year trucks get new motors. I'm getting a long block.

Also, I wanted a 5/75 warranty on the motor, had to buy that for $500 (power train).

Yea, sounds like I will have to settle for an FQR. The dealership told me to call the Ford 800#, but all they did was call the dealership and ask what was supposed to be put in, and they said an FQR unless Ford tells them otherwise. What a runaround. I couldn't get any names or numbers for anyone who could do anything, they said I would get the same answer from anyone I talk to. In the warranty it says they can use remanufactured parts.

As far as the warranty, there is no new one for the engine. It is only warranted under the original 3/36 from the purchase date. I told them go ahead and put in the FQR so I can sell or trade it on something else. What a dissappointing first/last purchase of a Ford product!

My slapper was replaced w/ an "off the assembly line" brand new engine. It was originally diagnosed w/ PS at about 27k miles and finally replaced 3 months later at 33K miles. When I asked, "FQR or new?", the service manager told me that they were replacing all '99's in fac warranty w/ new engines. So there was really no fight about that.

That was then and this is now. Good luck

BadAngler....

Did you see the new motor prior to them pulling yours?

Was yours a "current year" truck?

I had my 98 5.4 replaced at 50K due to slap. I still have no idea if I got a new engine or an FQR? How does one tell?

I have 12K on this new engine. 2 things:

1. Gets worse gas mileage than original
2. Seems to have quite a bit more power than my original. I must have gotten the 260 HP version?

So far, I'm very happy with it. Its not everyday you get a new engine at 50K for $50 (deductable).

Wichita_Greg,

Yes I saw the engine and took digi-pics of it. You can see them at:

My truck was a '99 and the engine was replaced June this year.
