2003 cobra
Hi,
I know this is has nothing to do with this site, but has anyone heard about the new Cobra's. 390 horse power and 390 Torque. Man thats gonna be a bad *** car. Its about time for Ford to step-up in the HP wars. The motor is a 4.6 DOHC, iron block, with stronger manley rods and different piston's. The 390 HP comes from a Roots type blower, looks like the one from the lightning. I think the HP numbers are alittle low. I've seen other cobra slap a blower on and make up in the 400's. Maybe Ford has rated it low to blow the doors off the comp. Just my thought, Well just wanted to write and see if anyone else has seen this piece of art!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 O- ya if you want to read about it go get the new motor trend, Later

Ford has probably underrated it for certain reasons, to the tune of about 10-15hp. Also, that blower will be warrantied, so that in itself means it will have much more potential with probably nothing more than a pulley swap.
Underrated it? BS! Underbuilt that car by far!
Think about it. Take a 305hp cobra 96-98. not even the new 99+ recall machine. Add a vortech S trim 6# on there and you are pushing 430-450hp without any other mods. So taking the 320hp motor and adding 70 is kind of a joke to be honest.
oh, did you see the prices? Yeah, give me a used 99 or 01 unit, add the $3500 Vortech and smoke it all day long. Or save about 8K and get a used 99-01 GT and do the same.
With the 03 cobra, you get the same brakes as before, but you do get 17x9 wheels compared to the previous 17x8s that have graced the cobras since 93.
But 35K for a mustang? cough cough! Sorry, but I would move into a BMW 330ci or Base corvette for that money.

70 hp is a joke for adding a blower. I forget how much boost it will produce, but the motor should easily make over 400 hp with just 6lb's of boost. Maybe they are playing the game that GM did with the LS1's and underated the hp rating. Those suckers were making almost the same hp at the rear wheels as GM rated the motor at. Then again, maybe the Cobra is detuned to make the halfshafts live in the IRS. And yes, $35,000 is way disappointing for a Mustang. Scary where they are headed. I guess gone are the days when somebody could afford to buy a GM stomper off of the showroom floor. And the only bad thing about buying a GT and adding a blower is losing the warranty if you blow something. Would be cheaper if it doesnt though. Ah well. I am stuck with my 91 (very happy though!) and couldnt dream of owning a Cobra for a while.
i agree with matt90gt, i really dont see how a blower (i bleieve its a roots-style blower) can only add 70 hp to a dohc 4.6 that already has 320hp NA. and the price tag is insane IMO. have you guys seen it? i believe it comes with the wider rims that someone mentioned and also with a different hood (looks kinda like a saleen hood).

For what it's worth, I recently read an article on the 2003 Cobra (C&D I think). They specificaly address the HP issue and the SVT engineering was worried about the recent problems with the Cobra not produceing advertised HP ratings. They claimed to have under rated the 2003 so potential customers would be pleasently surprised this time. I know, you can't believe everything you hear, just something I read.
Eaton blower at 7 psi

Larger wheels and tires
Stiffer springs

OMG! A 7psi blower only nets 70hp? HAHA.
Think about it. Take the 260hp 5.4. They add a eaton blower. 360-380hp with an intercooler. Hrm, that is 100-120hp.
The 6sp is about 3 years to late, 10 behind the Fbodies. Will be nice when you dont have to pay 35K to get one stock!
Oh, FYI. The Fbodies are dead. So the mustangs rule the streets by default if you are talking about the pony car wars. Which really sucks! no competition

There was a thread in the Lightning section about this. I would direct you there but without search it's just too much work. I think I remember reading that if they go above the 400 mark that it changes something to do with the EPA. I think they need to keep it around a certian number to comply. I could be wrong, or remembering incorrectly.
We know there is the technology to make real strong engines. I guess to keep them street leagal and maketable they need to be kind of conservative.

Stop complaining. If I had the 35Gs I would buy a cobra anyday. I had a 1996 Gt and it was fun to drive with 215 HP and like 189 to the wheels so I can only imagine how much fun it would be to drive 400HP. I do agree that its a lot of money but if it was cheap then the prestige of owning an SVT would go down as every 16 year old would get one. I know its a lot of money for a cobra but some people dont feel like adding the blower themselves so Ford has installed one already. Its about time too.

the cobra's cam timing was for max HP, the cam timing can't get more agressive. The 5.4L is more of towing engine and isn't really pushing itself. Add a blower and more agressive cam timing to an engine that wasn't pushing itself and you're going to get a big 'improvement'.
What does the Terminator's torque curve look like compared to the Cobra's? Where are the torque & hp peaks, what rpm?
FYI: ford probably understated the HP ratings to keep insurance lower and for gov't crap.
