Wal-Mart sells a code reader for Fords for about $25.00. It only shows current codes and not previous codes in memory.

The one at walmart is for 95 amd older which have OBD computer systems. The code reader for 96-present is for OBDII. I personaly have never seen one as cheep as $140 (but that does not mean it doesnt exsist). The ones I am more familer with are snapon(bluepoint), craftsman, and OTC. The problem with them is that they range anywere from about 500-thousands of dollars depending on how good they are. One of the benefits of an OBDII code reader is if you have a veichle 96 or newer it will work on all of them no matter if it is ford, general motors, or even chrysler as long as it not older than 96. For your sake I hope that there is one as cheep as $140.

You would think that either a local shop or rental yard would "rent" it to you for 20 minutes or so. Makes no sense to buy one of those tools for that much!

check some previous posts. I have posted this info before. You can pay for the scanner with the price of 2 garage scans.

Yes f150freak, there are OBD-II scanners for $140, you've just been under a rock. Go to http://www.actron.com and LOOK. Autozone is Actron's biggest customer and can get one of these scanners Federal Expressed in overnight at no extra charge. At $65 to $75 a shot for diagnostic time in a shop, I guess that'd be real smart, kkirt1 just to pay for an hour's diagnostic time each time you have an MIL. Think about it, bonehead; within a few trips the scanner's paid for itself.

I guess it depends on what the "rental" place would charge. My math and what I think would be a reasonable rental charge calculates out to more than a few scans... bonehead!

btw: Where did you get that attitude? Did you use to drive a Chevy?

Take your hat off.

kkirt1,
As soon as your dumbass can find somewhere that'll rent the OBD-II code reader that we're talking about, you just let me know smart guy.

Kilroy, Your a freaking jerk. If you don't have anything to add that is productive, keep it to yourself. Some people aren't as smart and worldly as you, thats why we have this forum.
Hope you have a problem some day and someone dogs your young *** out in front of everyone.
I'm done talking to you now...

I doubt anyone would "rent" a scanner. I bought the Actron from Summit for....$140. It is one of the best things I have ever bought. I had trouble with my truck a couple of weeks ago(blown plug) and it gave me the code for #6 misfire. Of course I still had to get the head repaired but at least I knew what happened before I took it in. Right now I have a bad cat convertor. How did I know? #1 it rattles. #2 error code for excessive exhaust. This thing definetly will save you money.

With that said even though you can read the code and find out basically what it means it does not tell you how to fix it. Nor can you run a diagnostics test like on the expensive diagnostic scanners that a garage will have.

You're such a sweet guy ostbloom, too bad you don't know the difference between "your" and "you're." Yes, I am a jerk. I do what's natural, kind of like you being naturally stupid.

Well, this thread certainly went to h*ll. I think a few of you need to tone it down a bit.
