Question What is a Triton?

I know...either the 4.6L or the 5.4L right? Well, what I mean is, what makes it a "Triton?" Why isn't the 4.2L a Triton? Why is it even a Triton at all, instead of just a plain ol' 4.6L V8? Thanks.

The way it was explained to me was that the 4.6 and 5.4 are overhead cam engines and the 4.2l is pushrod. I don't know much about engines maybe there is more to it than that.

I know quite abit about engines so, let me take a stab at it.

A Triton is a positively charged particle consisting of a proton and two nuetrons, equivalent to the nucleus of an atom of tritium.

Hope this helps.

I copied this from a website: More powerful than their predecessors, the Triton 5.4L and 6.8L are the only OHC 8 and 10 cylinder engines in their class. 95% of their pulling power is available at 2,000 rpm for low rpm/high torque muscle. With fail-safe cooling, the engine automatically beings a sequence of cross-bank, alternate-cylinder firings designed to help protect againgst damage due to coolant loss. And both Triton engines can travel 100,000 miles without a first scheduled tune-up.

Actually, TRITON is the name of the baby polar bear at the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence. The name was a compilation of the parents, Trixie and Norton (of the honey mooners). It is very fitting since Triton was also a greek god of the sea. Hey! maybe these engines should be in boats!

Agents Skully and Moulder tell me that the Triton is actually from outer space! Well, since I was more than just a little skeptical, they sent me here: http://www.solarviews.com/eng/triton.htm
I'll be damned, I'll never doubt them again.

I really enjoyed all the explanations for what a triton engine is but the truth is this: When a triton engine overheats, half of the cylinders shut down automatically and help cooling the other cylinders. This way you can still drive your truck to the nearest shop or whatever. If the engine gets even hotter then all the cylinders will shut down. This is a safety feature to prevent engine damage caused by overheating. I hope this helped.

Besides being a name for the engine-- I think
it is the name for one of the moons of Jupiter (or one of the planets).

Are not the 4.6 engines Modular engines? That originated from race engines? Due to there ability to be rebuilt very easily and quickly?

The 5.4 IS A 4.6 only with a longer stroke!

Triton is just a name that sounds POWERFUL!

All companies try and give a catchy powerful name to an engine they are trying to draw attention to. Funny, you give an engine a name like Hurcules and give it a loud exhaust tone and that automatically gives about 100 mental Horsepower!

ITS A SELLING POINT!

Ever notice how most the names have "Z", "V","X", or "R" in them?

Kawasaki ZX11-R
YAMAHA YZ 250
Exxon XCL-12?? What the hell is that? No one knows, but people buy it becuase "ITS GOTTA BE GOOD, ITS GOT XCL-12"..ooooohhhh!

V-TEC: sounds better than valve technology.

Z-TEC: Thats a good one?

Cobra -R?? R for Race?

Corvette Z6??

Camaro Z28: whats a Z28?

You get the point? Its a manly attraction feature....Its an illusion!

Cool

I remember reading on this website that Triton was the name adopted for the three modular engines. The 4.5, 5.4, and the 6.8, hence the tri in TRITON. And like the others said it just sounds tuff. Tritons have a distinct sound also, to me they do anyway.
