Post new or fqr on 99's?

I was told that i could only recieve a fqr engine for my 99 with piston slap, not a new engine. I have heard that the fqr's are new but are just packaged and assembled elswhere, does any one know? So if I can only get an fqr I will keep what I've got. Who knows maybe it will drop a rocker arm this winter, or the coolant will leak and short out my coil plug, or the head gasket leak again, oh i think now my front cover is leaking.

I have my first appt with the dealer on this issue next week. He said he is getting new engines, off the line, not FQR's.

Wichita Greg-
What Dealer ? I took mine to Eck last Winter and diagnosed with piston Slap. Ford refused to give me a new engine..FQR's only. I went as high as one could go and still got nowhere. I got slim to nil support from Eck. The whole thing still leaves a bad taste in my mouth and always will..no more Fords for me. Getting a FQR on a truck with 13,000 miles DONT CUT IT

By the Way, Eck also advised me I am getting a new engine "off the line". I took her home and read the paperwork..FQR ! Called Eck back, "Oh, we have no control over what they send us, that's all up to Detroit"

Good Luck, I'm interested in how you do and much hopeful you fare better than me

well i was told there is nothing they can do, so i guess no more fords for me either. my family has 4 ( 3- 99's & 1 '98 ) out of them, 2 head gasket leaks, 2 coil packs, 1 rear diff, 3 piston slap, 2 leaky back windows, 1 discolored signal mirriors,1 - 70k and rust on lower part of inner doors, 2 with ac clunk, 1 - abs problem , 2 - exhaust leaks, sure wish i would have bought a new then 95 roller block 351 4x4, probably would not have cost $ 35,000 either, for twice the truck.

I bought the truck used, but the original buyer got it from Lubbers out in Cheney, so I called them.

I first called Eck, and from the sound of the service writer, I knew I wanted nothing to do with them.

Eck has a good body shop...fixed my '94 Crown Vic a couple times and you could never tell.

I also have a Lincoln LS, and DavisMoore really sucks in their service dept.

I'm still a Ford man. Shuvy has their own problems, big ones, too. Dodge's are made in Mexico (at least one I looked at was) and way overpriced.

I may opt to buy an extended warranty and not get the motor replaced. Don't know yet.

We should do lunch sometime. Hooters has 99 cent wings on Wednesdays, I think.

Wichita Greg

What really Tee'd me off with Ford was there lack of sensitivity/Customer service with this issue and their Pompous attitude. I spoke with Many people in the "Ford Chain" and they all either could care less or had this pathetic "We are right no matter what" attitude. I feel my face turning red and my blood pressure rising again...I better stop

Hooters sounds good, Have not been there since I moved up from Florida.

If you are opposed to the FQR try Mobil 1. It quieted my slapper! I ended up getting one anyway. Not sure if it was the right thing or not - personal decision I guess.

Had my first visit with Lubbers in Cheney KS. Doug was very forthcoming with answers.

My '99 XLT SC 5.4 is a slapper. Fix is a replacement long block.

New complete motors are only put into current year vehicles. Now a 2000 would get a new motor, soon that will be only 2001's. 99's and earlier get a long block.

He said that means my original oil pan, valve covers, intake (and above), starter, exaust manifold and the stuff that hangs on the motor. So I'd get an FQR block with internals and heads with internals.

Pisser.

He will have his warranty advisor check with the zone rep to see if I can get an extended powertrain warranty instead.

I have the beginnings of the door cracks. He said no fix is available. If I come back when one is available, after my waranty is up, they "may" cover the first $750.

He will order a clamp for my rear leaf springs.

What should I do.

I love the truck, no other problems other than these.

31,000 miles and a rebuilt motor. I'd think I'd rather take my chances that nothing bad will happen to my original motor.

I could use Mobil 1, have an oil sample checked twice a year.

I will not be running it "hard" like racing. And the heaviest trailer I would pull would be a 14-16 foot travel trailer once a year for a thousand miles or so.

Max would be about 8-10K miles a year, mostly in town, in the winter months (I ride my motorcycle as often as I can).

Anyone got any suggestions?

I'm not real good at advice, but if I had it all over again, I would of just stuck with my slapping motor. Especially true if they would giveth me an extended warranty. Even with my reman Engine, I think the darn thing is still slapping. It's something more than the normal lifter noise, but now I just ignore it. If I get from A to B I'm happy.

I had numerous problems after the swap out (probable cause is Eck's ineptness) including blown heater hose (clamp not on tight) strange pressure release from A/C compressor, front end shaking which seems to be the motor mounts (in my opnion).

I don't think we should be afraid of the FQR's. I've got on in my '98 starting at 28,000. Now at 31,000. I've heard of other FQR's lasting to 100K+ with no problems.
I still hear a very slight slap on rare occasions. Extremely short lived and very quiet. I think they all have it to some degree. Especially, if you leave for a weekend, and start it on a very cold Monday morning.

Piston slap is very common in the industry. Much more so then we realize. And not just Ford's! It happens to the best of them - i.e., FORD.

Check out Chevy and dodge sites if you think fords are no good. It a matter of lesser evils. And Ford is less in that regards.

Just reading over all the input here. I just have one question! What does FQR stand for?

FQR - Ford Quatlity Rebuilt, hey guess what I work for ford, take a look at the intake side of those " quality rebuilds " nice and full of sand blasting material, but I was told to put it in anyway, I told them it was junk and to send a replacement, I guess I will see what happens. That is why I wont put a rebuilt in my truck, I just like to let the neighbours hear a $40,000 cdn. truck rattle, hey my old 302 mustang runs great and outperforms any 4.6 stang I have seen, go figure, and no piston slap either.
