Talking The ULTIMATE "cold" airbox mod. CHEAP!!!

Well, I took ownership of my 2001 last night, and where did I go first? Home Depot!!! I walked in, saw the banner that read, plumbing, and off I went. Once I got the the isle, immediately to the right, on the floor, I grabbed a Fernco PlumbQuick 3" - 3" P/N: P1056-33 For Sewer & Drain Use Only. It's a 3" to 3" coupler for drains. I took this home, took my whole intake out from the TB to the fender, and went to work.

First, I dremmeled the TB air silencer inside the larger box, and pulled it out. I cleaned the box out REAL well after the dremmeling. Then, I plucked the fender-side air silencer off of the airbox. Next, I slid the 3" - 3" coupler over the open end of the air box, and put it all back together. The coupler fits PERFECT between the airbox, and the fender. I noticed a MONSTER difference from stock, even though I had only driven it 30 miles before. I then, of course, reset the computer. This mod is AWESOME!!! I do my FM 40 mod today. Can't wait.

BTW, I was nervous as HECK doing this, as it only had 30 miles on it. But everything turned out fine, and I'm very happy.

I think what you described has been done before... I did the same thing about 6 months ago.

Didnt mess with the air silencer. Dont even know what that is.

However, I opened it up with a K&N filter and a piece of 3" PVC pipe coming from the Airbox to the fender.

Very nice gain I thought for about $20...

I painted my pipe black.

I realize that it HAS been done before...most everything has, but I think this way was the easiest, fastest, and cheapest, I've seen yet. The coupler fits PERFECT, and removing that TB air silencer makes a big difference. The air silencer I'm talking about is a small tube, 4" tapering down to about 2", inside the large 90 degree angled box that connects the TB with the airbox. Remove this, and you can utilize the entire "airbox." Got this idea from CRASH1 I believe.

Jackel,
What about the incresed noise from the intake? Is there any?

Thanks

Cool

No noise what so ever...though I kinda like the sucking noise my V6 had. The FM 40 isn't a bolt on...havin' it welded on in 45 mins.

Jackal,
I know I'm from the V-6 group, but do you think your cold air mod will make a difference with the V-6? If it does I'm changing to your idea right away.

Headless Horseman,
I did a very similar mod on my V6 and got what I thought were significant increases performance. (seat of the pants) It seemed to accel. faster from a standstill and respond better to pass at speeds above 40.

Oh yeah man...I just got rid of my 99' 4.2L yesterday. However, you aleady have an "opimized" throttle body intake. You'll see what I mean when you get in there. All you need to do is the K&N, and the 3" - 3" coupler. I just checked, and the distance between the airbox, and the fender wall is the same for the 4.2L and the 4.6L.

BTW, I didn't not invent anything "special." I just happened to get lucky, and it worked out GREAT!!! Plus it is very easy, and super cheap. Probably about $9.00, IF you already have the K&N.

ARGH, I did the air box mod, but no noticable difference. What am I doing wrong? I guess I will have to superchip it after all. But, Lance Cunningham Ford said if I superchip my truck they will void my warrenty, and I would have to pay for all repairs myself. They seemed pretty upset that I even put a K&N filter in it. Help me out guys! Please

Thumbs down

That's Bull!!! I don't think they can void your warrenty for that...they have to firsdt prove that your mod. created the problem to begin with. Also, you can always just pull the chip out before service. Also, did you reset your computer after the mod.? Give it a few days...it'll re-learn the settings. BTW, you'll notice the difference a little more if you have a high flow ehaust installed. What were you expecting, a 20 H.P. gain?

Unhappy

Hi Jackal, No I was not expecting a hugh gain, maybe a little and maybe some noise from the sucking air, but acts and sounds the same as stock As for the Superchip, the ford dealership said no matter what they could tell if I had chiped it even if I take it out to be serviced they had a computer that could tell them all the good stuff. I think they are full of it, cause everytime I go to have my truck looked at my computer will not talk to their service computer so I might be safe on that end. I am going to talk to the superchip provider here at F-150 Online and see what I can do about chipping my truck Thanks for your help Jackal

That's odd...maybe it's because you don't have an exhaust. Mine ddidn't either, till I had it done last night. Now, when I step on it, I get a LOAD sucking noise. I love it. It would really "suck" if you were to make it an open element setup.

Hey Headless_horseman, Theres a law in the books that states the dealers CAN NOT void a warrenty just because you installed any aftermarket modification. Mike from Superchips here in this forum under "computerchips" has the info on the law!
Also they are full of it as to being able to tell if you installed the chip. Only if you don't reset the computer before going in can they see the settings are not with in ford perameters. And even then it could have been the computer itself that changed the settings. My brother is a Ford wrench, he said the first time he came across a chip , no one in there shop could figure out the codes. The owner finally spoke up about the chip, then all was well. Hope this helps, Benny
