Ticking / Knocking Sound...
I have 900 miles on my truck, and from the begenning, the engine has made a noticable ticking / knocking sound, and does so ALL the time, speratically. It's not the A/C, or anything like that. (I don't run the A/C usually.) Does it sound like "pinging" to you? Not piston slap is it? What should I do? Is it normal? My 99' 4.2 didn't make this noise. TIA

I would bring it by a ford dealership and let them have a listen. But they have a way of saying everything is "normal" even when its not...
FYI
My 99 5.4L has always had a slight ticking sound from the engine, loudest on the passenger side. After reading some of the post on this sight, it sounds like your injectors ticking. From what i've read, piston slap is only at startup.(depends who you ask)

You do not have piston slap. The 4.6L was not known to have the slapper problem. I've got the same engine, it is the injectors. I was wondering on this sound also until I went under the hood to have a look. While it is running, push down on the injector, the sound changes its tone. I wouldn't worry about it.
Sounds like injector chatter. Not a problem. You might try using different brands of fuel. Manufacturers of fuels that have additives to keep injectors clean help. You would be surprised how small of a spec of dirt can make a difference in a injector.

Great...thanks guys. I noticed today, after I got home, that it was hardly noticable at all. I usually fill up with QuickTrip, but I also hit Total and Phillip's 66 occasionaly.

4.6 engines have had piston slap. Do a search you will find a topic about it. However it does not seem very widespread in the least. Not like the 5.4's.

Before clutch fans, nobody heard any noises from engines. When OEM went to plastic-tipped timing chain gears because of noise -- that was the indication that engines were really getting quiet.
They are Sooooooooo quiet now, that being able to hear an injector is absolutely phenominal!
If you hear it at an idle, it is not spark knock -- and piston slap is extremely rare.
Valve train noises are very common and can come and go even within minutes in an idling engine.
I've chased gear noises that sounded like the gearbox was beating itself to death only to find an interference that hardly made a mark.
It is amazing at how loud the most minute imperfection can be.
