Synthetic oil plans-Any Suggestions?
This site rules!! I wish all of the ford dealers would review the problems and solutions listed on this site....we seem to know more than they do at time....lol...Thanks for everyones post and reply's......
This is my plan:
I have a 99 F150 5.4l 16k....
My plan is to switch to Mobil1 synth oil and stay with a Motorcraft filter at my next oil change. I plan to stay within Fords recommendation, changing @ 5k until my warranty runs out. I am used to changing my oil/filter @ 3k. Will i be overdoing it if i change my filter only at 2,500 miles and then change oil/filter @ 5k....
Whats your opinion?(agree/disagree)

I've used 100,000/150,000 engine lube in the last 4 cars I've had.
The fiberglass (not paper) filters last 30k mi. With no problems. The stuff is 100% synthetic, no petroleum at all!!! Mobil 1 is still a mixture of synthetic and petroleum and an inferior product, and doesnt warrant its price if you have to dump it every 5k mi.
The stuff I use retails for $30 a qt. I think there might be a price break when you order a whole kit.

The White Monkey,
I don't really have a choice with the 5k mile oil change as long as i'm under warranty. If for whatever reason it breaks...Ford is buying me a new 5.4l engine$$$..not me.
As far as this Syn-Lube goes...you don't change your oil...ever...you are a braver soul than I...
Thanks for the feedback...

The White Monkey:
Not to start anything, but where did you get your information on Mobil 1? I have talked to Mobil and many other manufacturers and They do say that their products are 100% synthetic. The only one that has been caught claiming this (and wasn't) is Castrol with there Syntec. And inferior, please expand. Just looking for Info.

I use Amsoil Series 2000 0W30 synthetic & SDF 11 filter & change every 10,000 miles. Have over 100,000 miles on my 97 4.6 & it doesn't burn a drop. NUFF SAID.
PS: i use Amsoil products thruout, including PI fuel system treatment.

Well, keep that warranty happy. This product also claims to be warranty friendly.
I would consider myself less brave now than the first vehicle I had this stuff in. The concept of leave in lube is odd but since I've been doing this product. I periodically have a sample analized for wear and debriss.
The fiberglass filters filter down to 30 microns and dont deteriorate and mix in with the oil causing a sludge situation.
Basically with big American V8's the song has remained the same over the years. Keep the fluids clean and full and they'll run forever.
Mobil 1 is a tri-synthetic product (petroleum based) It will allow up to 24k mi or 1 year between oil changes. With trucks, I would say the safe interval would be 9k-15k mi.
If the 100k mi. oil thing was impossible, why would the Northstar Cadillac shedule it's first oil change at 100,000 mi?
The future is here, I first had this stuff in a leased vehicle because I didn't believe the claims either.
Going Mobil 1 is a great way to go also. You'll just have to change it once a year minimum.

I would think twice about going the 1 year with Mobil 1.
Unless the bottle say's specifically the last time I email exxon/mobil they recommended that you change at the manufacture's interval.
Just to back yourself up contact them to be sure of the oil change interval: http://www.mobil1.com/

Additives in standard oils breaks down as early as 2000 to 2500 miles. It is a good idea to change it early.
Synthetic intervals are usually doubled.
I would stick with the Motorcraft FL-820s, though...

If you're changing you oil at regular intervals (3,000 mi.) Just use whatever brand, sae30, and don't worry about it.
In this situation, it doesn't sound like synthetics will gain you much of anything. Except extracting more $$$ from your wallet.

As I mentioned above, the only reason I am planning on changing the synth. oil at 5k is my "WARRANTY".
After reading through other post on this site, I have noticed that there are quite a few people out there with 1999-2000 model F150's that are going 10-12k between oil changes...Has anyone had any problems with having service done under warranty with these oil change intervals?? (Also, was you dealer even aware of you oil change intervals), Mabey im being a little too cautious, but who needs the hassel if something does brake...they always seem to be looking for an excuse to not cover something...(past experiences)...
Thanks for all the feedback....

I haven't had any problems going with extended drains and I have not heard of any from others, but I would suggest that if you are concerned with all of this do what you feel is best.
That is why Amsoil came out with the 7500 mile oil change, because so many folks were not comfortable with going 25,000 miles.
Also just because it say's 7500 miles or even 25,000 miles doesn't mean that you have to go that long--Just knowing you can is still a great feeling.
Kinda like a Dogde Viper--Just because you know it will do 200 mph, doesn't mean that you have too, but it sure is cool know you can!!
