Question Wrong Engine Oil

I ran my truck through a local X-Press Lube shop and did not realize it until later that the techs had put 10W-30 in my truck when Ford calls for 5W-30. Should I be concerned about harm/damage to the engine?

Go back and demand the Ford spec'd oil. You run the risk of voiding your warranty.

Members have had problems with 10W-30 oil. It's too thick to flow like 5W-30 first thing in the morning and this causes the engine to clatter.

I beg to differ with Dennis. I am actually running 10w30 Mobil 1 right now just as a test. Someone mentioned it might help cure a nosiey motor (piston slap). I have also seen several new Fords run 10w30 without a problem. Again, I am doing this as a test. If it would make you feel more secure go back and make them change it to a 5w30.

I am also running 10W30 Valvoline SynPower in my truck, and I always have. Never hurt anything for me, but I am not under warranty, and you may not want to do anything that could cause Ford to void your warranty. Go with howeveer you feel best.

A fleet truck at my friends company - v6 with 180,000 miles is running 15w-40 and that truck still runs great. Not sure how long or even why they are running oil so thick but they aren't having any problems.

I don't remember what the users manual says but usually don't they print a graph (the one with 2 arrows) that says 5-30 for all climates, 10w-30 good for above like 10 degrees or so ? Now I am curious, gotta check the manual....

I very much doubt the 10w will hurt a thing. But I would do what we overly-observent (paranoid?) owners do anyway, and just listen attentively for the noises your motor makes, and if it's not getting oil pressure fast enough, you'll be able to tell.

What I would be definately more worried about is the filter they used, however..... You can find out more about oil filters at:

http://www.minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.html

Or better yet, ask your dealer. (Let us know what they say if you do!)

Hope that helps...

OK. I give up. You all know more about Triton engines and oil than the Ford engineers do, so put whatever you want in your engines. Put 50W if it makes you happy.

I put Valvoline 70W racing oil in mine....rattles and shakes like hell when real cold, but once warmed up the engine runs great.

10W-30 should be ok in South Carolina. I still would use 5w-30 like the manual says next time.

I value the opinion of most of the people on this board (and yes that includes you Dennis). I would never claim to know more about my truck than any engineer, and that same engineer probably thought of things that none of us ever would. Like over engineering a triton motor to hold up to some poor sole that puts in the wrong weight of oil. Yes sure anything can be taken to extremes (like the 50 weight, boy that would be bad) but using the wrong oil once will not hurt it. At least I hope not or I and many others are going to have big problems. I could be totaly off based, what do I know.

My original point was that he should take the truck back and have the lube place drain the wrong oil out and put the right one in. It's not his fault they screwed up. Lube joints should know what kind of oil to use in a particular engine.

I totally agree. It was their goof and they should fix it (with me watching over their shoulder) and after they do I would never go there again. The frist time I had mine changed I looked on the invoice and it said 5w30. I was like what the he##, I was brought up in the old school days of my father and thought every car should have 10w30/40. Since then my tune has changed. If he's in warranty and likes/loves his truck (and by posting this thread I am sure he does) he should change it. But his question wass basically if it would harm his engine and my answer was no probably not. I mean no ill harm/feelings to anyone. With that said I would say we all done.

10w-30

I went to the dealer for my first free oil change and requested 5w-20 and they said not to worry and put in regular ole 10w-30. That's ok because from now on I'm doing my own. My local autozone has Motorcraft blend 5w-20 for 1.39 a quart. I bought all 12 on the shelf.

Dennis, I doubt that this changeover to 5w-20 was an engineering decision. This came from beancounters looking to score CAFE points.
