5.4 and 4.6 heads the same?
I need to replace a head due to a bad plug thread and someone suggested that I use a 4.6 mustang head. I've got a 5.4 triton and I want to know if this is really a possibility. Thanx in advance.
That sounds like a pain, try to put a coil in there first, changing the head out is a big job. Ford actually lifts the cab off of the frame rather than pull the motor. Yes the heads for the 4.6 and 5.4 are the same, the 5.4 just has a longer strong, but I'm not sure if the mustang head has the same valve sizes and such, just check all of that.

All I have to do now is take of the harmonic balancer, timing chain cover, valve cover, timing chain, and cam...then off with the head!! I know it's a pain in the butt. I'm also going to replace the timing chains and gears while I'm at it. Truck has 130k on it, and since I'll have the motor broken down this far....might as well. Thanx for the info. I'm going to call Ford in the morning and see if the parts jive.
Ok, here goes.
The 97-present 4.6 Truck heads are the same as the 4.6 96-98 Mustang 2v GT heads.
In 99 Ford went to the PI heads in the mustangs which require a different intake.
1999 Ford also went to the PI heads in the 5.4 for a 20hp upgrade. Until them 96.4-98 is the same as the 4.6 heads, different intake for the wider valley between the heads.

Sweet!!! I posted this on two other forums and so far only one person told me no. Due to Matt90's help with my brakes in the past I was glad to hear from him that it is possible. Plus someone else showed me a link to SHM's site discussing the possibilily of even putting 4V cobra heads. But I'm not out for that with the truck...I just wanted to fix it and let it ride.
Here's the link.....and thanx a ton for the help.
