Question Smokin' Blue

Gotta problem....2000 F150 4.6 auto, 9000 miles, on a cold start I get quite a bit of blue smoke for a few seconds. No smoke after engine warms up. I haven't contacted dealer yet but plan on it. Any help on where it's coming from?

Blue smoke at cold start up and them stopping is usually an indication of leaky valve guide seals. I would definitely take it in to the dealer and complain.

Smokey.. I've got the same crap going on with mine. I'm only alittle over 6k. I'd say about one in every 10 starts it will knock and belch some nice blue smoke.

I've already received the "It's normal" sh@t from my dealer, but at the moment I"m currently fighting another issue with them over intermittant stalling, Check Engine lights, and constant misses. If they can ever get that cleared up before I start getting real nasty I'll have them take a peek at it.

Boss, how involved is a problem like that? It's nice to nkow what I'm up against.

I had the same thing with my '96 when it was new. When I would start it "cold" below 40 degrees and then drive it right away i would leave a cloud of smoke for about a mile or so till it warmed up.
But if I started it and let it warm up as I know it supposed to do there would be no smoke.
Was told by a mechanic friend that it was prob the computer just not adjusting the mixture right on cold running. he said he saw it many time before. He had even once broke a head down to replace the valve guides to find them fine.

Not saying it's the same thing as you guys had but it's a possibility.

Thumbs down

Lets see, you'll hear it's the humidity, it's normal during breakin, there is anti-freeze maybe in the oil..

blah, blah, blah,

I've posted on this several times. A person on the F-D forum got it right on the first try, as did a Tech I emailed.

as did Boss Hog.

Ta' Da' there it is. Now it is a matter of the dealer fixing it.
If they do to you like they did me, more probs will pop up afterwards...
It goes back after the weekend.

I have a leaking exhaust now, a door panel that rattles(they tried to fix the window earlier), and now a leaking diff.
I WILL lemon this truck by Thanksgiving at this rate. I'm beging to think that the new f150 are a pos. I"m dying to get a new SD.
At least those are meant to smoke at start up.

Cool

My 99 4.6 did this a few times, about every 10th or so start up, loud lifter rattle noises and blue smoke bellowing from the tailpipe. It turned out that I was using a Purolator PURE 1 oil filter and Mobil 1 10W30. I read the owners manual and it said 5W30 only. I switched to Motorcraft filter # FL820s and Mobil 1 5W30 and it has not done it in the last 10K or so. The noise was due to the wrong oil and the smoke was from the wrong filter. 10W30 is too thick at startup for the close tolerances of this engine and the FL820s filter has a silicone anti drain valve. The Purolator PURE 1 is supposed to be the same filter but I don't think it has the silicone valve. with this combo my truck starts smooth as silk and no smoke. It may be worth a shot to some of you.
