Top Speed of Stock 2000 5.4 F-150?
Is there a rev limiter on my 2000 5.4 F-150?
TRUE STORY!!!
A little over a year ago, A friend of mine challenged my Newly purchased 2000 F150, in his stock 1999 Mustang GT Conv. We were on Interstate 54 in San Diego heading Eastbound. I was cruising around 70 mph when he tried to pass me in the outside lane. I turned off the Overdrive button on my automatic shifter and punched it. I pegged the needle at 100mph, but the RPMs kept climbing. We ran for about 2 miles and he NEVER COULD PASS ME
! We were moving so fast, I could feel my truck starting to float, like it was almost lifting off the highway. I glanced down at the Tach and I had the RPMs up to 5000 without the overdrive on. We were coming up on some traffic ahead, so I let off the throttle and eased back. When we returned to my house, I asked him how fast we were going since I couln't tell in my truck. He said we were coming up on 135 when he was up along side me. Ouch!@... Nobody will beleive this story.
A mechanic I talked to said that this was not possible. That my engine should have shut down when I approached 100mph. Not here pal. My 2000 F-150 Flareside 4x4 offroad just kept on goin'
How is this possible. I read in other threads here (Computer Chips) that it takes aftermarket computer chips to achieve this. I am running a stock 5.4! I guess I got a good one...
Sorry for such a long string...

Yup . . .
I've had mine up to around 155 km/h (95 mph) and that's about it . . . I never did try more because I know the governor kicks in just before 160 km/h or 100mph. In any event, it was fast enough for my package

top speed
My 98 did not shut off until it hit 110 before I put in my hypertech.
To those of you that said you couldn't go past 100 did you have your OD turned off?

I was doing a flyby on a two-lane blacktop about 3 weeks ago and the gov kicked in around 3200 rpms in OD (3:55 rear end does someone have a web calculator to do the math). The needle had been pegged for a long time and I wasn't going to get the GPS out to check it while driving that fast. But my estimate is about 110. My stock T-bird (V6) would quit at 115.
In my initial post, I mistakenly said that the Overdrive button was "ON". That is not true. The entire time, the overdrive button was turned OFF. Perhaps this is the reason that the limitter did not engage. Perhaps it only works when the truck is in overdrive??? I am not going to test this. I also do recall having the Dealership remove the stock alarm system the day I purchased the truck. They ripped the entire dashboard apart to get at the alarm underneath. Perhaps they disconnected something?
Anyway, It did in fact happen .... 135mph. It even seems a bit unbelievable to me, for a pick up truck with little to no aerodynamics to achieve such speeds.
Anyone else have this occurance?

Chief,
I am having trouble with this one. But if you say so then it is true. On the other hand, Neal the HP freak has a 4x2 reg Cab that is modified and he has trouble going 135 mph.

Maybe it has something to do with the 4WD?
I have made one really high speed run in mine (99 XC Flareside ORP, all stock 4.6 Auto). Had it at about 4400 RPM in OD. No idea how fast I was going, but I covered about 55 miles (including about 12 miles of city-type driving) in about 33 minutes. And this was with 10 kegs of beer in the bed. (16 gallons each x 10 x 8 pounds/gallon= 1280 pounds in the bed). Felt perfectly stable. A little unnerving, but stable.

I've got a '98 with a 4.6/Auto w/3.55. In OD, my truck has such little power after 90 it would take forever to get much over 100 if it didn't shut off. Even with OD turned off, I don't think mine would make it anywhere near 135.
HI!... NAVY CHEIF : What is your tire size? With that info, I can figure out on my DRAGMATH program EXACTLY how fast your truck was going at 5000RPM in 3rd gear. My truck has around 330H.P and I can JUST hit 115MPH in 3rd gear with my 4.10 gears and 29.99 inch tall tires. The fastest, I've been able to go for top speed is 137MPH.
Neil,
I am not sure exactly what they are off the top of my head. I know that I have the Good Year Wranger ATs. 17"rims. Etc. I am at work right now and will check on the way home. I will post the tiresize in about 2 hours.
I Can't beleive what I am reading here. Eveyone is like shutting down around 100mph. Let me tell you, My truck pulls like a bull far beyond 100mph. I must have something special in there somewhere that I am unaware of. I will look into this. A friend of mine is a mech at a Ford Dealer. I am going to have him look at it.
I can't beleive my eyes. It is really bothering me to see all the resposes of those that are unable to exceed 105. I know for a fact that my truck went far beyond 100mph. This is really interesting to me. I am no mechanic / Gearhead by any means. Nor am I a Story teller. I have nothing to gain by making up such a story.
I don't want to be know as the greates story teller at f150online. I am going to talk to a buddy who owns a mustang GT and we are going to run another test on a closed circuit. I will get back as soon as I get the results. I promise you all, I am not crazy. This is why I had to ask the question. Why am I so FAST????

HI!... NAVY CHEIF : I think probably that you have 265/70/R-17 tires on your truck with the info you just gave me. At 5000RPM in 3RD gear (1.00 :1 ratio), with a tire height of 31.61" and a rear gear ratio of 3.55, you were going 132.50MPH!!!!!!!! Did you buy this truck used?
Neal, I think you are probably thinking the samething I was about to mention. That if he did buy the truck used then the original owner may have forgotten the chip in the truck. The chip would easily allow the truck to well beyond the original shut down point and would allow it to pull hard like he mentions.
Man, your just too fast
.... well, at least on the board anyhow !!!!!! LOL !!!!!!

I bought my '99 Super Cab 4x4 ORP 5.4 used and I have not found the top end in it yet. I do not know if the previous owner chipped the pickup or not. I have added straight pipes and that is it.
I haven't taken it past 115mph. I dont know how much fast it will go than that, and I really don't care to find out; at least not in a pickup.
