FQR Engine Reliability ??
FQR Engine Reliability ??
I just had my 99 5.4 replaced @ 30,000 with a FQR engine because of the head gasket leak and piston slap.So far everything seems fine but I wonder about the long haul. For those of you who have had FQR engines installed what has been your experiences with these engines. Thanks in advance for your response. Ken
I have had mine for..
I have had my FQR in my 1999 F150 since around 32,000 miles, and I now have 63,000 miles on the engine, and have been really happy with it, doesn't leak any oil, runs better, and seems to have more power than what the original did in my truck, and it is suppose to be the same engine, just different year. I haven't had any problems with mine. Now the transmission is a different story all together though.

same situation as you, got my FQR at 22000, now have 33000. The FQR is smoother, stronger, and gets better MPG. However, right now I have that burning smell like the first time the gasket started leaking oil on the manifold, except Ford can't find anything wrong. Engine is still running fine, though.

Thanks for your replies MNFORD99 and firstimeford. I sure thought there would be more post about the 5.4 FQR engines as much as everyone whines and cries about the head gasket leak and piston slap issue's on this board. Guess not huh. Ken
Have had an FQR engine in my '98 F-250LD 4x4 supercab since 28,000, now have 47,000. No problems. Although, I still think I can hear some piston slap on occasion, depending on the tempature.
But not to worry, I hear Ford does not even replace slapping engines now.
Can anyone comfirm this? Or has the problem really gone away?
