Question AMSOIL???

Well, it costs just as much as any other synthetic oil, so I figure why not. They claim 1 year or 25,000 miles. I don't want to start a debate, I just want to know what everybody's experience has been using this oil. Has it been lasting the full 1 year or 25,000 miles? Would you use it again? Why or why not?

Just looking for everybody's 2cents on this. No arguments please. Thank you.

Thumbs up

I pick up for a Dealer and he swear by it. I have read about and really is a great oil. They clame to be the first synthetic oil out there. The dealer has a 87 Buick with 200,000 miles and does not smoke. He said he changes his oil every 25,000 miles and the filter (oil) every 5,000 miles, just take the filter off and put back what you loss. The filters are about $7.00 to $9.00. But whell worth it.

Good Luck.
I havent used it yet. But will soon.

Sycoholic, I've never used it, but I've asked others who's opinion I respect. They have nothing negative to say about.

I too, have been considering using this product with my next oil change. If you decide to order some, contact me, maybe we can go in on a Central Jersey group purchase.

I just swithed to Amsoil. I have 50K on my Expedition but have 1K on my new 5.4L (replaced for piston slap).

I purchased the 5W30 because the 0W30 was too expensive for what you get compared to their 5W30.... $5.50 vs. $7.50 or so

I IMMEDIATELY noticed a much smoother running engine! I also use their filter, although thats questionable weather or not you HAVE to use their filter. I would think ANY quality filter would do (Motorcraft!!!)...

Others have done an oil analysis at intervals to test the oils additive package. I plan to do this myself. This will prove the theory of changing once a year or 25K!

I am going to change the filter every 3 months and change the oil once a year. I will send the oil in for analysis every time I change the filter. I think that costs about $20 or so....

The oil, from what I've read, appears to have superior quality over most other oils. I have found this info on the Amsoil site as well as articles written about oils.

Good luck!

I also just put in the Ow-30 and it seems to have made the engine run smoother especially when first starting up. I did not have the piston slap problem it just seems to run nicer/smoother. I was going to order the oil from (Michael Sparks Amsoil dealer) but when I went to Mother's Performance with a friend they had it there, so the price worked out to be the same if I would of had to have it shipped. They just don't have the Amsoil filter's so I use the stock motorcraft. I'll probably just change the oil and filter every 6 months anyway, keep the engine happy. The oil filter's are $2.99 for the FL820s at AutoZone.

Cool

mtknee, they sell it right here in my town for $5.?? a quart. I didn't ask if they have their filters though. I'll have to do that next time I go. I think I'm gonna take the plunge and try it.

I'm here don't fret.

I have a few things to say here.

1. You must use Amsoil's spin on filter to be able to go the 25,000 or the 35,000(Series 2000). This filter is more effecient and also has a higher capacity so you can go the 12,500 miles or six months. Amsoil has a warrenty and it specifically say's to follow their directions.

2. I belive in Amsoil 110% that is the only way that I would even consider being a dealer. I also run the stuff in my vehicles and can attest to the better start up. I was running Castrol Syntec 5w50 and when I went with the 0w30 you only hear the lifter for maybe 1 sec 2 max on very cold mornings(which doesn't say much here in El Paso haha). I plan on running the 0w30 year round here as it say's on the bottle that it will replace all 5w30 and 10w30 oil.(Because of the higher flash point compared to conventional)

3. For those who are very leary of the 25,000 or 35,000 mile drain interval's there is nothing that say's you can't change it early at your own convience(whatever makes you feel good)

4. If you are really not comfortable with the 25k interval. Amsoil makes a 7500 mile oil that is designed to be replaced every 7500 miles or six months--and you can use any OEM filter with that one.

5. XL7500 synthetic oil is the only oil that you should use a non-Amsoil filter with. But I would advise you use the Amsoil SDF with any oil that you choose including any of the non-synthetic oils. This filter is very superior to most other filters the exception being the Mobil1 filter and mabe the new Fram Tough Guard (That is if you trust fram anymore).

6. I repeat if you are going the extended drain of more than 7500 miles you must use the Amsoil SDF Filter http://www.amsoil.com/products/sdf.html
If you can't get the filter locally you can order them via the internet or by calling 1800. If you have a 4.6 or 5.4 It is SDF 11.

Well I hope I covered everything. Sorry I've been out of the loop lately.

What does FoMoCo say about the 3/36 warranty? The owners manual has recommended oil change intervals of either 3000 or 5000 miles and makes no provisions that I found for different oil types.

Well I guess that FoMoCo probably say's the same thing about the superchip, velocity tube and any other mods that deal with your engine. As long as the oil is doing its job you should have no problems, but if you do Amsoil also has a warrenty that will back you up.

I hope this helps, I know that there are alot of people hung up on the warrenty issue. My best advise is to do what makes you comfortable. If you cannot sleep at night because your oil has been in your engine more than 5,000 miles I would change it sooner.

On the bottle of Amsoil is say's that you can go 25,000 or 1 year, but it doesn't say you have to. No one said that you can't use Amsoil and change it every 3-5k.

Hope this helps

Amsoil's Warranty,

I now have a copy of Amsoil's warranty on my web site. It is an exacty cut and paste from Amsoil's site--which is hard to find on theirs. So I hope that this helps some.

Well I just dropped $80 and bought 7 quarts of the Series 2000 0w-30, sdf-11 filter, engine flush, and a fram filter to catch all the stuff that came out of the engine flush.

The engine has 8000 miles and this is its second oil change (50% highway miles). I drove into the garage, took off the original filter, wiped the drip pan, and then installed the fram filter. I put the engine flush in and ran the truck at a fast idle for 16 minutes. I then drained all the oil (The stuff that came out was nasty!) and replaced the fram filter with the amsoil filter and put in 6 quarts of the 'good stuff.' I'll let you know in a year or 35,000 after an analysis is done how well things turn out.

Hint: When removing the filter, put on a rubber glove and use your left hand to unscrew the filter and right hand to screw a new one in. The fit is a little too tight for a band filter wrench, and the end-cap style just seems to slip.

Your engine only has 8k on it and you had alot of nasty stuff come out??

I have been recommending the Engine flush for engines that have 20k+ on them. Maybe I will start recommending that sooner.

I'm sure you will be happy with the 0w30 stuff. One thing though is to make sure you check your oil level pretty regularly. At first you might have some additional oil consumption until your rings and valves seat a little different. Just don't get worried this might last 6 thousand or so, if it even happens at all. Then you oil consumption will virtually stop all together.

I hope I wasn't too confusing.

msparks,
The oil had been in there for 4k miles. Perhaps my definition of nasty is different, but to describe it:
black, seemed almost chunky (maybe just bubbles forming in the drain container.), and very smelly (I think from the flush.).

It's been 300 miles, the level hasn't dropped and it's still crystal clear. At $8/qt, I hope too much doesn't dissappear.

I'm now at 15,000 miles and everything still looks great, I can barely see the oil on the dip stick. The filter change will come in September.

I have 8,500 on my Amsoil 5W-30.

I started out with an Amsoil filter and changed it a 5K to a Mobile1. From all that I've read, no one has convinced me that the Amsoil's filter is any different or better (other than the warranty). The cost is the same so I might go back to Amsoil.

I went to the Outer Banks of North Corolina. Did a lot of highway driving and a lot of beach driving. Somehow I used a quart of oil?? Thats a first. Topped it off...Still ok! Whats up with that? Its a new FQR 5.4 with 8500 miles on it.

The oil still feels VERY good, not watery! It also looks only slightly discolored.

I plan to change the oil this month and do an analysis! We'll see how good the stuff is!

I did clean my K&N at about 6K on the oil. I think the K&N might end up showing a lot of silicon in the oil? We will see!

BTW: Thanks for your input!
