Post What are the affects of warm air into the motor?

i have an Airraid and am SERIOUSLY wondering the affects of having all that warm air from the engine compartment going into the motor.

I was debating to whether or not to return it and just get a drop in K&N replacement filter with the stock intake because I like the fact it's drawing air from outside.

I'm not a mechanic and I do appreciate any feedback on my questions.

Thanks in advance,

Blue

Apparently you loose 1 HP for every 11 degree rise in temp.

I made my 3" intake for about $20 and it draws cold air from the stock fender hole.

I do know, when you have a very large hot engine in a small area, you will have quite a bit of heat in the area surrounding the source! Moreover, the air that gets into the engine compartment comes mostly through the radiator which is exchanging heat. Thus, even more hot air.

For performance, you always want the coolest and least resistance air available!

I couldn't have said it better myself. I cannot, however, verify those figures.

I, too, have used PVC, and you can see the finished product on the Magnacharger thread.

I also have the Airaid and had the same concerns. I also have to say I couldn't tell any difference in performance after the installation but it really sounds good. I made my own hot air dam out of the bottom of a 30 gallon plastic trash can, still can't feel any difference. Evergreen performance supposedly makes a system with the air dam for the Lightnings but not the F-150s. I have read a lot of the posts about this being a big power robbing problem and others that it doesn't make hardly any difference.

Well guys,

I was really considering scrapping my Airraid set up and going with a WMS Velocity tube because of all this negativity regarding warm air with the Airraid.

I spoke with an ASE mechanic from 4wheelparts and he said that warm air going into the engine won't kill that much performance. He said the performance comes fom the amount of overall air going in the motor. He also said that the MAS adjusts the ECU to adjust for any temperature increases.

I actually put back the original intake last night after driving the truck all day yesterday and I have to admit, the performance gain using the Airraid is considerably noticable however, I just hate the fact that hot air is getting sucked in.

I am thinking about buying the WMS velocity tube to give it a try. I'll let you guys know what I find unless someone can convince me otherwise

crash1,
disregard what I said in the other forum I understand a little better now.But would an airraid or k&n settup be ok if you have a functional ram air hood?Or maybe just a hood scoop with some louvers or a hole cut out below the scoop? The only reason I ask is I am thinking about getting a hood scoop( made by good hoods ?) and if it was worth it a hole in my hood wouldn't be a bad thing.
