Wiat a minute hear is what I am hearing correct? that a 4.6 5speed is faster than a 5.4 auto.. ?? I mean are we comparing true apples to oranges or we runnin a 5.4 auto 3.08 against the 4.6 speed with a 3.55 ?? I could see a jump happen with that situation .. In all reality the 5.4 needs the 3.73 or a set of 4.10 to wake that mod engine up.. cause you plant that 350 ftlbs at 2500 and rev it faster thats what it needs .. Now I have drove both my dads 4.6 deff sips gas and feels nice and peppy or I drive my 5.4 2000 4x4 that melts the back tire off but eats gas like no tomorrow .. I Say if your not trailer pullin hungry like me go with the 4.6 5speed by all means .. But if your a serious contendor with sleeper truck racing a 5.4 with a set of 4.10 gears and a PI converter with a level ten trans kit and we are talking mid 14.s on nuts .. then add some juice see low 13's or high 12's I was impressed to see it at the track .. Thats if you are serious about takin money .. Thats my two cents!!

HI!... 14's with just those 3 mods? I don't think so! Trust me I know what it takes to get a N/A F-150 with a 5.4 into the mid to low 14's. Read lower SIG.

Have any of you driven the 4.6 with a stick? Or was it the slush box? Big difference between the two. When I posted I made no reference to towing or gas milage. Simply put, in stock configuration in the ¼ mile the stick will win.

I hear ya JMC ,,,,,,,,,i don't only know it ,,,i've tried it just last week-end,,,,,,,of course there wasn't anyone marking down our times,,,,,,,,, but we were just side by side from a dead stop and my 4.6 5spd ,,, showed that 5.4 how it was done ....
If you shift it right and at the right time ,,,,,,,,,,,the 5.4 auto will have a hard time beating the 4.6 stick.
from 0-55 ,, the 5.4 was a little more then half a truck lenght,,,,,,after 60 is were the 5.4 started to pull up to me.

Comparing apples to apples is pretty hard to do since there aren't many 5.4's out there in regular cabs. From previous threads on the same subject I can tell you we came to this conclusion: Stock atleast a 4.6 5-speed regular cab will beat a 5.4 Auto in an extended cab with the rear end and everything else (such as driver skill) being equal. I believe there was about a 2 or 3/10's of a second difference if I remember correctly.

However less than a third of a second isn't enough to make up for all of us that aren't stock, the fact that driver skill isn't equal, and the fact that not all trucks run the same even with identical powertrains. So this areguement will never end! Just like BrotherDave said, the 4.2 guys claim there fastest, the 4.6 guys claim there fastest, and the 5.4 guys are just as convinced there the quickest. Personally I think unless your Neal or have an L there all relatively slow! My 4.6 is strong, but it's a long way from being fast!

Brotherdave has the right idea. Times don't lie, and if you get enough times it will acount somewhat for the variables. Once you get a load of times you can look at the fastest 4.6 stock times vs the fastest 5.4 stock times and assume both were with competent drivers and with good track and weather conditions.

On NLOC, they made a thread with listings off all times submitted, included what mods were on the trucks. The same could be done here. They used a letter code to designate mods, and went from there. Once the ground rules are made its easy.

Personally I like to see same track, side by side comparisons more. Changing weather and track conditions play a big role.

if your primary concern is quarter mile times, it must be difficult not to be king of the hill when you've spent all that extra money on a 5.4 and auto. but let's face it, these aren't performance vehicles. if you use the f150 for its intended purpose as a truck, the 5.4 clearly has value from a torque perspective for towing etc. but the 4.2 hauls and tows 99% of what most f150s will ever see.

For what it is worth

Independent testing agency

Tundra 4.7 AT(I think it is 4.7) 7.79 0-60

Beat everything but the 5.4 F150 AT No time given

Don't know if they tested the 4.6 stick

hey STX/98
, when i raced against my friends 5.4 auto,,,,,,,,,my truck was also an extended cab 4X4,, so we were running almost the same weight and everything ,,,,,,,,mine just had the 4.6 5spd , and it made the diference,,,,,,,,,,and just last night i got to try the truck agains one of those oldsmobile Alero's ,,,,,,,,,,,i whooped his but from 0 to 100mph ,,,,,,he had to be 5 truck lenghts behind me ,,,,,,,
i know these trucks aren't made for that purpos (racing),,,,,,but hey ,, it's a perk that comes with getting Fords ,,,,,,,there fun to drive.

Congadulations on the kill... I thought those Alero's had that 300 HP NorthStar engine in them, and would have thought they would have been a little faster. (I'm probably getting it confused with the Aurora.) I did read somewhere a couple years ago that the NortStar looses more HP by the time it gets to the rear wheels then just about any engine out there. IF memory serves me correctly it didn't put out much more than 200 HP to the wheels. Either way I'd take my STX over an Oldsmobile all day long

Aleros have ether a 4 cyl. or a V6. w/ 170hp
Dont be too excited.
I stated before, I raced a 98STX reg. cab flareside. w/ a 4.6L 5speed.
Against my 99 Reg. cab Flareside Off Road w/ a 5.4L

He can bang the gears well and I smoked him trough the Bottom end and even more after 45 to 50mph. No lie
