we have seen stock times for the 5.4 regular cab between 15.7 to 16.0 and the v-6 5-spd from 16.6 to 17.2. lets see some 4.6 times and put this to rest.

to each there own, i will drive a stick to run 13 or 12 (zo6 vette) but i am not driving a stick in traffic (houston) to run 15 or 16 when a 5.4 auto is available that runs just as good if not better.

Yeah i see your point BROTHERDAVE
, but if i could have a the 4.6 wich drinks ALOT less gas then the 5.4, weighs a little less and could get down that 1/4 mile faster ,,,,,,,you can bet i'm gona save some money and get that 4.6L 5spd
I've tried a couple 5.4's but never really raced one side by side with my 2001, 4.6 5spd ,, but i can tell you just by the feel that my truck seems to pull better then those 5.4L ,,,,,,,
When driving those 5.4 auto ,, it makes more winding noise then anything else ,,,,,,of course it's got torque ,,,,,,,,but that's only good for the the first 200 feet ,,,,,,,,

Brotherdave,

If you look at the times for my truck against Redwings you will see that they are close. Take off a few tenths and you have the 4.6 5speed times. That assumes they are shifted for speed and not like a Sunday driver.

thats all fine and great but with all the trucks on this board and all the good drag strips around the we shouldnt have to assume anything or talk your times to his times to get the answer add and subtract to get the answer. how hard is it for some one with a regular cab 4.6 stick to go to the track?

i really dont think the gas milage is going to make or break anyones pocketbook. what maybe $200 a year 3.84 a week or .55 a day? (normal driving)

all i am saying is show me a legit time slip from a 4.6 stick that is 15.7 or better ,stock, and this discussion is over.

from what i read if you drive the 5-speed the way it need to be driven to beat the 5.4, it will reward you with problems.

I drive a 4.6, 5-speed. I don't think that there is enough of an advantage with the 5-speed to beat an equally eqipped truck with a 5.4.

Even if we did get the trucks to the strip, the argument would continue. There are way to many variables. The driver being the most important. If there could be a professional drag racer driving the different trucks, that would be more accurate.

My best, and only time ever recorded was 16.52. This was with the Superchip and cat back exhaust. It was also my first time on a drag strip. I made errors. I think I could have run high 15's. I think. I hope to be running at the track again this year, but I don't think I will be close enough to stock to get accurate numbers.

We all want to think we are the fastest. No matter what we are driving. There will always be something that will go faster.

Didn't buy the truck to race but will tell you one thing. I had a '98 with the 4.6. Bought the '00 with the 5.4. To me there is no comparison. If anybody with a 4.6 thinks they can beat me, bring it on. It ain't gonna happen. Just my opinion.

Well I am thinking about a new one and want power .
At 65 my days of shifting are over, especially living in megalopolis with a stop sign or light every corner .
It will be 5.4at if I decide to get rid of my F150 5.8 and get a new Ford

You got 1 out of 3 right. For what it's worth, the 5.4 drinks A LITTLE more gas than the 4.6, but by no means A LOT. More surprisingly, the 4.6 only drinks A LITTLE more gas than the V6.

I had a 5-speed 4-cyl. '97 Ranger and a 5-speed '90 and '99 Mustang GT. I wouldn't want a 5-speed F150 if it were free, but to each his own. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but my friend has a V6 2001 regular cab F150, and although it rides nice, it's just not for me.

OK, OK, I would take a free one !

I guess i'm just gona have to try it this week-end ,,,,,,,,
Maybe not alot more gas ,, but more anyways ,,,,,,,,i've goten to best 22mpg ,, and the best i've seen for the 5.4 on thse message boards was no better then 18.5mpg ,, so to me that's a good diference.
But a friend of mine does have a 5.4 (2000)scab 4X4 and he has tried mine and thinks mine does pull a little better ,,,,,,,,,but i'll try it this week-end ,,,,,,,,better yet , i'll try to get a time at a local track

Well, I don't think this one will ever be settled. There will always be the excuses of missed shifts, or not stalling it at a high enough RPM, or too much wheel spin. I based my "assumption" on beating a similar 5.4. Same truck except for 5.4 and auto. Granted both trucks were 4x4s and both were chipped but it should hold true for the 4x2s because a chipped 5.4 has a few more HP added with the chip than the 4.6. So if a 4.6 stick gets beat by a 5.4 or vice versa I don't realy care anymore. Enjoy your Fords.

I actually got to try it again this week-end , and from 0 to 60 i was half a truck lenght ahead of my friends 2000 XLT scab 5.4 4X4
and i have a 2001 scab 4.6 5spd 4X4,,,,, but as soon as we got to about 55 mph ,, you could see the 5.4 top end HP start to kick in ,,,,,,,,,,,,but at 60 i was just a litle bit a head of him ,,,,,,,,,,,but hey ,, a inch or a truck lenght ,,,,,,,,all i wanted to proove was that someone who knows how to drive the 4.6 5spd like it can be ,,,,,,,,,can beat a 5.4 auto from 0 to 60

I like the results! Now we just have to repeate them several times so that it creates a pattern. It sounds good, but I don't know. I think my 4.6 is real strong. I drive a E250 with a 5.4 for work and even that feels pretty powerful. Shifting is critical to beat a 5.4. I still don't think the shifts are clean enough to get the thing going fast enough.
Come the beginning of March I think I will be able to take most (not NEAL or the Lightnings!) 5.4 autos from 0-60 and beyond. I wont be n/a any more though. I'm so excited!
