Cool

Well if you really want to know, just ask here. It's nice to have access to such a large pool of opinion and fact.
So what we all agree on is USE SYNTHETICS.

Thumbs up

Pennzoil changed every 3,000 seems OK but I didn't like what I saw when I ended up running about 4,000 miles between changes (Yes I'm a sinner!) it had a pronounced scorched smell and was sludgy.

I've had very good results with Castrol, Valvoline and Mobile 1 in my vehicles.

Cool

I have used Pennzoil in my cars and trucks the majority of the time for about 40 years and have never had a problem with it. I try to change about every 3,000 miles but sometimes go longer.

I have never beleived in the 3000 mile rule. I think is usualyt overboard. I have always changed between 5000 and 7500 and have never had a problem. Most cars I have had went over 200000 miles. At this point I usually wanted something new since I would wear out the seats before the motor. I know alot of poeple will come back with all kinds of numbers on why 3000 is better, but I have yet to personally see it. I once did do 3000 mile changes and the motor still was gone buy 140000. If 3000 is the best, why not do 2000 or 1000 mile intervals, would this equate to even better engine life. I think engine life has alot to do with the actual engine. I saw many of 305 LG4 gm motors cams dies way before 100000 miles regardless of oil change interval. On highway driven car, I think 7500 intervals is fine. Everything else 3000 to 5000, 3000 being a full time tower driven like you hate the thing.

I use Amsoil Series 2000 0W30 synthetic & have since 3k miles. I now have 94k + on my truck & no problems whatsoever. Plus, I only change oil every 10k miles. Ialso use Amsoil SDF11 oil filter. "What a waste of money to use anything else."

I just looked into the Pennzoil Pure base add with the oil pans of the other oils sludged up and the Pure base clean. Although the Pennzoil Pure base oils are better than they were, this add is just marketing hype!!! I asked Penzoil about the other oils and found out that the other oils were poor quality group II oils and the Pennzoil Pure Base is a Hydrocracked group II+ or also could be called a group III with all the refining they do to it. They also said that they severly boosted the attitive treat for detergent, which is what did most of the cleaning in the pans.

Keep in mind that this only says one thing ---It does not address the other things that an oil should do like reduce wear etc.

Sincerely, Kevin

A good friend of mine grew-up on a farm. His father still runs this cattle farm in VA. Well, his father has always had a pick-up truck. His father started having to pull a trailer every now and then (couple of horses in it). He had a 90's model F150 with a 350 CID. He too used conventionals. 3 engines later... He doesnt pull that trailer any more. Point is, he FRIED 2 engines even with the 3000 mile changes. He aslo had the problem of starting his engine, driving it 100 yards, turning it off, feeding the hogs, starting it, driving to the chicken coop, etc... This was doen twice a day every day! Thats damage for ya!

Wonder if he had used a better oil like mobil1 or Amsoil if he would still have the original engine?

Thats VERy harsh circumstances! Requires a VERY durable oil!!!

I would be probably a lighter weight diesel oil would have been a pretty good comprimise in the that situation,

Even a 15w40 would not have drained down in the 10-15 minutes that he was starting and stopping. Just my opinion, though you know I would say go for the synthetic. It would have held up much better than the stuff he was using, I bet he was getting a lot of contaminent buildup and possible since his truck want' getting to operating temp he was haveing alot of moisture in his engine.

msparks,I just paid $57.00 for a pennzoil synthetic oil change,The oil seems okay truck is quieter now but I am a little worried about the oil filter. It was a PZ42 and I can't find out if it has the drain valve in it or not I asked the guy doing the change he said yes but he couldn't understand English very well.I searched the pennziol sight and couldn't find any thing out there either.I'm thinking of just redoing it again myself with mobil1.

My suggestion is,

go buy you a good filter an one quart of the stuff you had put in. On a cold engine take off the old filter and slip on the new, then top up with the oil. You will be okay and save yourself another $50.

Some filters too look at are the Mobil 1 filter, Amsoil SDF11, the new AC Delco gold filter and the Pur 1 purolator. Those are the top of the line filters as far as effeciency goes.

Amsoil is top as far as capacity, since the filter is designed to go 12500 or six months.
