Question K&N vs Airaid FIPK

I'm in the market for a FIPK. I see there is many guys with FIPK on their trucks but which brand is better? Any feedback from guys who have them on their trucks would help me make up my mind as to which brand to buy. Is this money worth spending?

I have the Airaid installed for 3 months now and love it. Great fit, great performance, no problems and beats my home made intake hands down. If I had to do all over again it would be Airaid from the begining. In conjunction with a chip and free flow exhaust it can't be beat for the bang for the buck.

Cool

I can't afford to get the chip & exhaust system right now. But they are in my plans. Where did you buy your Airaid system from?

Racer4YSR,

You might want to read some of the recent posts about the Airaid. People have been complaining about a whistling noise at idle. There's a little bit of noise with my K&N (as with any open air box) but I don't think it's anything like the Airaid kits.

I got mine from truckperformance.com but you have to be careful when ordering from them. They're much cheaper than everyone else but their customer service is awful and sometimes delivery takes forever.

Good Luck

Racer4YSR,

The noise issue with the Airaid is only on the 5.4L, not the 4.6L which we both have. I bought my FIPK right here on the digital market place. It's a great way to support this site and the value these forums provide.

I noticed that the K&N and the Airaid uses different air filters. Is there any differences. Looks like the K&N has a larger opening. Also the K&N seems to be dangling at the end as obposed to the Airaid seems like it's secured at the air filter side. I'm in favor of the Airaid strickly by looks but I like the K&N by it's reputation.

Racer,

I'm not sure what you mean by "dangling." The K&N is only attached at the tube intake, I guess that's what you mean. It's pretty solid and doesn't wiggle around or anything. I don't know about the opening being any bigger but the filter itself on my truck is HUGE!

I've had my K&N on for about 3 months now and have had no problems with it.

I don't know if it makes that much of a difference but it seems like I've seen the cleaning kits for the K&N around more than the Airaid (although I would imagine you could use the K&N cleaner on an Airaid).

Which ever one you go with I'm sure you'll be happy they both seem to be good products. You'll love the sound when you "get on it."

Cool

As "Kentucky" said the K&N is a very rigid installation, mine does not move around at all. One other consideraton, K&N is "smog legal", not sure the Airaid is, seems I read somewhere it is not, but I may be mistaken. If that is a concern K&N may be the logical choice. ALso as has been previously stated the sound is great, sounds like my old Tripower Pontiacs when WOT!!

Hi Racer4YSR,

Just so you'll know, we see the same power gains on the dyno from either the Airaid brand or the K&N brand of airbox elimination kits. On the 4.6 F-150, that's 12 hp at the flywheel, and on the 5.4 it's 14 hp.

So just from a power standpoint, either kit works equally well.

If I had to pick a personal favorite, it would be the Airaid unit, but either one works just fine, and installs easily.

As far as where to buy it, we suggest using the F-150 Online store because it helps to support this great free website, as someone else in this thread already pointed out. That's where we buy them anytime we need one for any of our vehicles.

Best of luck whatever you decide,

I think the K/N kit is better simply because
it is plastic and doesn't absorb as much heat
as the metal tube on the airaid. means a cooler air charge, But,on looks alone the airaid wins, hands down. I also have had bad
service from trk perf. whs. There website is
still not up(they've been advertising for almost a year now) and they never sent the catalog that they promised(been waiting for 2
months now)

"98 Screamer"
Not sure we are talking about the same vendor. Try http://www,truckperformance.com
Their website has been up for atleast 6 or 7 months that I know of. Their prices are good but several have complained about deliveries. I haven't had a problem.

Does anyone know if the Airaid is smog legal?
When I do purchase my FIPK I will order it from The Digital Market because like it was mentioned it's a great way to support this site.
