Only comment is I wouldnt trade my K&N Airfilter for anything. I'm in love with the extra horsepower and 2.5MPG

2000Lariat and Racer4YSR -

The tube on the Airaid is metal, not plastic. The Airaid is NOT smog legal. They don't have the CARB exemption number like the K&N unit does. I talked to the Airaid people about SMOG legal before I bought anything. They didn't sound like they were going to go through the trouble to get an exemption number from CARB.

Based on the above information, I bought the K&N unit but when I got it home, I didn't like the lack of support at the air filter. It just hangs on the end of that plastic tube. The tube is also shorter so the filter ends up being right in the middle of the engine compartment. I returned the K&N unit to the store and purchased the Airaid.

The Airaid has very solid mounting at the filter end and uses the stock mounting points. In addition, since the metal tube is longer, it places the filter right next to the opening in the fender well where the stock airbox attaches. That tells me that the Airaid will gulp cooler air than the K&N.

So far, I've been very happy with the Airaid. I have a 4.6 and don't really hear any whistling noises. As far as SMOG goes, if I have to, I'll simply put the stock airbox back on my truck when I have to get the SMOG check. I kept all the stock parts so this process will only take me about a half hour to do.

There's my two cents - I hope it helps.

Question

Has anyone installed an FIPK then added the factory cover and piping to the fenderwell? I'm interested in getting one, but it seems like their is more potential power gains by isolating the filter element from the engine compartment. I've read of some people modifying the stock system with a 3" pipe to the fender, but wondered if something similar has been tried with one of the aftermarket systems.

Thanks,

Sven

Mr. Wizard,

Everything you said is exactly what I wanted to know. Looks like I'm ordering the Airaid and when I get my truck smog checked I'll put back my stock system.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Somehow I got likned to a forum on the WMS velocity tube. I thought I would post the link here.
https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000889.html

The tube appears to be, basically, an Airaid syle intake that can be mounted to your stock airbox. This is what some of you are asking for. If you add the K&N (stock replacement) filter - this is exactly what you guys are asking for. The tube goes for $89 (US).

Here's the exact link: http://www.wmsracing.com/pgi-Product%20Spec?WMS-VEL97F

The website also appears to have a lot of other good stuff.

Cool

"Mr Wizard"
There must be a difference in the Gen II K&N between the 97 and 99-2000. On my Y2K the filter sits all the way over on the left side of the engine bay, a couple of inches for tne air intake in the fender well. My kit would fit both 4.6L and 5.4L, included the parts for both applications. So they must have made a change somewhere along the line.

Thanks, Way2Big. I guess I haven't been that far back in the posts yet.
