Question RPM Drop while accelerating

hi my name is Toby and I have a 97 F150 with
a 4.6L, AT, and I installed a K&N air filter and a flowmaster cat-back exhaust.
I was wondering if any one knows why the engine RPMs drop whenever I accelerate heaily? When I mash the gas pedal I often notice that the RPMs raise to about 2000 really fast, then drops dramatically to about 1500. I also notice this on a lot of the new cars as well such as the Contour and Ranger. I'm pretty sure this is normal and I'm not too sure if you already answered this question. But I just want to know why the engine does this before I make anymore modifications to it. Thank you very much.

You need to be more specific when this is happening. You engine rpms always drop when you rtanny shifts. Ford has also programmed in a timing retard after upshift which may account for some of what you are experiencing. Although when I mash my gas pedal I go alot higher than 2000 rpms.

Are you able to tell when the torque converter locks up?

Are you feeling/seeing that?
