Raced a 2002 Dodge...
OK. Test drove an 02 Screw Fx4 5.4 w/ 3.55LS. Drove it to the Dodge dealership, jumped in an 02 1500 Quad 4x4 5.9 3.92 (same one I test drove Saturday). No comparison - the Dodge would definitely win a 0-60 race. The Screw with 3.55 fealt really sluggish compared to both the Dodge and my F150 w/ 3.73. I can't imagine what the Dodge will be like when it finally gets the 5.7 hemi...
PS: Ford - please let people choose the gears that best suits their needs.

I dont' know about the 5.9 , but i had a 99 Dodge with a 5.2L with a chip & K&N filter and a Dana44 tranny and was running a little over 250hp and it couldn't compare to my 4.6 that i have now.
I actually tried my Ford (2001 scab*4, 4.6L 3.55gear ratio) against one of the new Dakota's wich are running 231HP and 300lbs torque and if i'm correct my truck only has 230 HP and 293lbs of torque,,,,,,,my truck being heavier i thaugh that i'd get blown away ,,,,,but right of the line he was a full trucks lenghts back and by the time i got to 70 ,, he was 4 to 6 truck lenghts behind me ,,,,,,,,was pretty sweet.

Tires
I pulled the 245/75/16's off the first week I had the truck. I now run a 265/75/16 Goodyear ATS. Truck lookes way better but it did slow it down a little, not enough to stop me from going to a 285/75 next time...
Man, this truck sits high...

For what it is worth
I have a 93sc with the 5.8/3.55 gears
235/75R15 tires a K&N set up and Gibson Swept side
My wife just bought a Dodge QC 4X2 4.7/3.55 with 265/70R17s
I drove both
Her Dodge is way more responsive . It fact just touching the pedal and it jumps.. It throws you back in the seats stronger than my F150
It only has 60 miles on it and I will get it on the freeway tomorrow and see what it is like at speed

Throttle Response and Seat-o-the-pants
Aren't some of the newer vehicles using drive-by-wire instead of cables for the accelerator? If the manufacturers know that we like snappy vehicles, wouldn't it be pretty easy for them to program a faster rate on the accelerator?
I don't go around looking for street races(though I rarely avoid them), but I haven't met a stock x-cab 4x4 that I can't beat from 0-70. The only guy in town that has raced me twice is a Toyota Tucoma, his gears keep him with me until he grabs 3rd and I leave him behind.
BTW, how tall are the tires on the new Dodge with the 20" wheels?
Am I the only one who thinks it looks like a Basset Hound?

I checked into tire size for you guys and dang...it's tall. P275/55R20 for a height of ~31.8" on the 2wd. P275/60R20 coming in at ~33" for the 4wd. So if they have 20s, they better hope they get 3.92s or better....
Both the F150 Screw and Ram 1500 I test drove had 265/70R17. 3.55 vs 3.92 and the torque curves under 3500 rpm aren't that much different, it's easy to see why the Dodge felt stronger.
One other note on the Dodge, the mileage on the window sticker was 11/15, the Ford 13/17. I have always averaged 13.5 - 16 with my 5.4 3.73, so I know the Ford sticker is accurate. Can the Dodge really get that bad of mileage city driving? Sheesh, I'm thinking the Ford v10 can do that in a heavier truck...

Something is definitly wrong here.
No way should that Dodge have whooped you. I have yet to see a 360 ram fall less than 3 truck lengths behind me in a race.
The only challenge is my friends 01' Silverado with a 5.3l. We run dead even.

I can tell you for sure that no stock 5.9L can catch me. None except for maybe the R/T Dakota. Run him in 2wd. He'll be singing a different tune.
As for HP/Trq. Debate:
Torque is a measure of the amount of work done by an engine.
HP is how fast an engine does its work.
High torque/low hp: Good trailer puller; bad racer
That's why a Chevy 6.5 will (supposedly) pull 10K.
High HP: Good racer... keep it out of the fields.
That's why a S2000 can get away with 159 lb-ft torque.
