The next "MAJOR" mod I plan on making to my truck is to get a good set of high performance heads...I really need input on where to find aftermarket heads to fit my truck with the setup I have now(see Profile.

Any help is greatly appreciated

I'm not aware of anyone making after market heads for our trucks. You may want to focus on looking for someone to do a *good* porting job on your stock heads. Be careful though. There are a lot more hackers with die grinders out there than real experts. Spend a lot of time doing your home work. Ask plenty of questions. I would probably start by questioning the mustang crowd. By that I mean the guys that are fairly serious racers. They might be able to get you pointed in the right direction as far as who are the better head massagers.

Wrangler dual battery kit with red & yellow top Optima batteries. Torsion bars cranked up 2 turns. Needs one more door.

contact steeda. they have done a LOT of development on the 4.6 engines for the mustang. They should have the info you need.

Just a idea here, but since the engines are modular see if you can swap some 4v heads on there. hehe.

SHM sells heads but they cost a ton, houstonperformance.com sells recut cams and heads (same a on the 4.6 - almost) that are ported to go on your truck. I believe they are only getting 25 - 30 hp out of both sets. I think this is why to high for the small hp increase. Keep me posted as I am also hunting heads or head work.
Good Luck,
Alvin

Question

Hey dogleg,

I noticed that you have a Pro-m MAF on your Lightning. Did you notice a appreciable amount of gain with the mod? I'm wanting to get on for my Expy but I'm concerned about the open air filter drawing in the hot engine heat. Also, whats the "powertube" that you have in you signature? Thanks in advance!

Hey Waytobig,
Thanks for pointing the sig. was wrong. The powertube was a tube that did away with the airfilter box and allowed the cone K&N to match up to the MAS, the Pro-M did away with it.
The Pro-m did not add any hp that I can tell but I have not dyno'ed since I added it. It does smooths out the way the truck runs. I don't think it is much bang for your money but I had to have it. Doing away with the airbox was a great help but it is louder.
I see you are wanting to add a cobra type hood, check out the zing listed and see one on the truck.
Take care,
Alvin

I hear the Extrudehone is supposed to work well but have not used it yet. Anyone? There were a pair of heads (used) that sold on E-bay last week for $175.00. I thought that was pretty cheap. Watch in the aoto "pars" area I've seen 5.4s there a few times. Good luck.

Question

Hey dogleg,

Your truck has the looks of whats underneath the hood, "I'm Ready to Race!". What did you pay for the hood and where?

Also,, what did you mean by "I had to have it", on the Pro-M? Did you have any problems at all with it, etc. check engine light?

When I'm pushing over 3 tons of truck down the road, I want all I possibly can get out of her, without any headaches or course.

Got the hood from American Auto Designs, Inc.
16051 Pinto Rd.
Unit 1
M.Ft. Myers, FL 33903
941-995-5052

It's a great hood, great fit and looks GREAT on the inside when it is finished and painted.

The pro-m was put on when I installed the swanson chip and the chip was burned for the pro-m. So not problems thier.

The '99 5.4L heads are actually pretty good units. The cams are much more aggressive than previous years. In fact they are the same heads as the '99 Mustang 4.6L GT and help account for about a 40 hp increase over the '98 motor. Most guys running these heads are porting and 3-angle valve jobbing them to get a few extra horses. Be cautious though. With your Magnacharger, you may be facing fuel starvation and a limited MAF range. Make sure you are getting the most from the current hardware.
