Question MAF HOT!!!

I got home from work and finished my intake box modification. As I was putting everything back together I touched the MAF sensor and noticed it was very hot. To the point where you almost couldn't leave your hand on it too long. Does anyone know why this is?

The MAF use a hot wire screen that measures differences in temperature to figure fuel delivery.

The whole body of the sensor was hot. I wouldn't think the two little screen wires in the air tube would make the whole body hot.

All I have done is put in a K&N filter and then replaced the rubber tube that goes from the air box to the fender with a piece of 3" drainage PVC pipe. I've also put on a Flowmaster 40 muffler with duals out back. Jumpn: just e-mail me somtime and we'll hook up. rjfrench41@aol.com

No not that hot. I could leave my hand on it for about 10-15 sec before I needed to take it off.

It is hot because it is aluminum and conducts heat like crazy. It is exposed to the underhood air which is very hot. Remember the air that make the sensor hot is also the air that you might be drawing in to the motor, make sure you are getting fresh air.

I am drawing fresh air from the fender. I wonder if it would benifit from putting insulation around the MAF?

Why not insulate the whole intake tube to the TB. Remember that there are two kinds of heat, radiant and conductive. Thermal barriers reduce radiant heat but can concentrate conductive heat. A wrap could be counterproductive, but a shield plane from heat sources might do some good.

I think a coiled tube around the intake tube with icewater circulation would be the trick setup for the track. Damn bags of Ice are messy! LOL
